Help me find heavy green and black keycaps for a new tkl!
« on: Wed, 13 November 2013, 14:03:37 »
I've decided to go ahead with the filco maj 2 and I really want to get some sweet heavy pbt keycaps to go along with it. I really want to make it look really cool. I pretty much want something exactly like this : except with either blank or engraved keycaps (pbt heavy - which is the best, right?). Can someone help me find the keycaps? I really don't know where to find good ones or how to go about making sure they fit correctly. I currently have a razer blackwidow ultimate and i really like the type of profile these caps have. They have a good height and have little indents where the fingers can sit in - as opposed to being completely flat, which I don't want. I love that darker green color (it matches my razer mousepad and the green light of my deathadder mouse). Also, how does it work with fitting in with the costar stabilizers? Will it be an issue to replace the modifier keys on the filco? I won't need to relube them or anything, will I? Any help you all can provide would be great. Thanks!

Those look somewhat like WASD.

Or you could try Tai Hao, but they are DS ABS.

Filco has standard layout - any ANSI keycap set should fit.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Thanks - but I really want the thick pbt. Everyone says they feel like a dream for everything. Any ideas where I can get them? There are so many terms that I'm unaware of when it comes to keycaps. Any idea what the blackwidow keycaps are so I can get something similar to that since I know that I like that shape?

EDIT: I found these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/37PBT-Plus-thick-Single-color-Key-caps-for-MX-Cherry-Switches-Side-printed-/300997693802?pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item4614dc516a
Are they any good? That seems cheap for thick PBT. I could get those and find some black modifier keys, though I'd prefer the green color in the picture I posted. It says in the description that I need to check the key height and that those keycaps are 1.5cm. How do I know what I need for the filco majestouch 2? Thanks.

Those seem reasonable, and IIRC there was a thread about them somewhere here.  Can't find it atm though.

They are only those 37 keys - you will need a lot more to make the pattern you have illustrated.

Most PBT sets I have seen are white, beige or black.

I really appreciate your help. How do I know which keycaps will work for the filco? Don't they have to adhere to a certain profile to fit / feel properly on the board? http://deskthority.net/wiki/Keycap_profile

I sent messages to feng (from ebay) and imsoto asking if they had blank / engraved thick pbt green / black keys. I'd be fine buying black standard keys and green modifiers if the price is too high, as opposed to two full sets of keys.

Any standard layout keycaps will fit (assuming it is US ANSI layout Filco).

As for profile, the original Filco keycaps are OEM profile.  These ones also look OEM profile, so they should match the standard Filco keycaps.

Thanks a bunch. Do you have any idea where I can get the caps I'm looking for? Have you personally tried the thick pbt vs standard pbt? Is it actually any different for typing / gaming? What are your thoughts on topre for gaming?

EDIT: Also, what's the difference between OEM and Cherry profile? Will the cherry profile keys work just as well on the Filco / WSAD board?

Cherry profile is shorter, I recently got two cherry profile thick PBT sets and they are so much nicer than anything else I've tried (ABS, regular PBT, Zinc)
I personally like the shorter profile a lot more.

Thanks. Any idea what the blackwidow ultimate keycaps are? They seem short.

EDIT: At this point I'd be really happy if I could just fine one solid darker color (green / blue / purple / black) in thick pbt OEM profile. I can always get another color and add to it later. Anyone have any ideas where I can get this? I'd be happiest if it was blank, but engraved / front printed works too.

Blackwidow is almost certainly OEM, as are most keyboards not specifically marked Cherry profile. They're less flashy of course, so I guess they're not desirable. Not to make any excuses, I love them for how tall they are. As far as acquiring a set, qtan has something that seems similar to what you shown albeit with a less gaudy font, which has lots of colors and I think has thick color.

Are the keys you linked OEM? I appreciate the help, but I really don't like the font on those key caps. I actually also would like to get the same set for the letters and number keys because I use the number keys so much for starcraft 2 and I would like the letters / number keys to have a consistent feel. Any ideas on where else I can look?

They're OEM, but I'm not too sure about other options. Thick PBT is rather hard to get without top print.

If it looks tasteful I'd be okay with top printed. I'd have to see it.

Does thick pbt actually feel different than PBT? Isn't the ducky stuff like, thin pbt?
