Vortex "Cherry" legend keycaps
« on: Wed, 13 November 2013, 09:10:09 »
Just spotted this on the Vortex FB page, very weird. The font actually looks pretty spot on apart from the unusual sizing and placement.

It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Looking closer they've definitely messed up the 4 key, not even close mate!

Poor Vortex.

Sooner or later, they're going to stop listening at this rate.

I hear you, this may sound mean but it's like training a dog where anything they do (as long as it's in vaguely in the right direction) has to be encouraged. Before long they'll be making PBT DS sets we actually want to buy!

Bravo Vortex!!

Edit: actually if you look on the fb site these look suspiciously like PBT DS!! :O

What they should do:

Make 3-4 prototype with dye-sub, show em to us and make us vote. After 3-4 iterations they should get it right!

And pbt double shot cherry profile for sure  :thumb:

Top centred is common for backlight-friendly keycaps.

Maybe this is one of a line of keycaps that will include backlight-friendly ones.

^  Yeah I think they're ramping up for backlit double shot PBT for the new backlit Poker.  Though in this set there is F1, F2, F3... etc row so maybe this could be used for the new Race?

Either case they're in the right direction so far.  :D

It's true, Vortex deserves a lot of respect for their keycap endeavors.  Not only do they listen to feedback, but they are the first company to offer actual thick doubleshot PBT keycaps in a variety of colors for a VERY reasonable price.  As in ridiculously affordable.  Same with their dye sub sets before.  And now they are doing even more by adding reverse colored modifiers and changing the font to what people demand.  For every "I wish this were different in X way, then I'd buy it" reply, there should be 5 replies saying that Vortex is doing great work for the keyboard enthusiasts.

This.

A few vendors lurk around GH, and when they respond to feedback from GHers the vendor's karma soars! :)

There are some nitpicks -- some of the letters are a bit off, 4 is way off -- but these look very, very good.  The modifier and navcluster text is noticeably better than the Cherry Replica font, due to the variable line width which SP cannot duplicate at that scale.

The alignment is jarring, but I could get used to it. :D

Didn't mean this thread to come off as nit-picking was more posting it for everyone to take a look. Just notice little things like the 4 because I have Cherry caps on all my boards.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Does it matter if something's an exact replica of Cherry legends anyway?  It's not like Cherry legends can't be improved upon, like the odd #.  I can't wait for Vortex to release color on white + reverse modifiers for sale.  Those will be awesome.

I'm just as excited as everyone else to see stuff like this hitting the market, you've missed the point. Was just saying that as a Cherry fan it's something that I notice. And to be fair if they are going to sell them as Cherry replicas then they should be expecting a little criticism at least.

Sorry, wasn't really directed at you specifically.  I just see this mentioned frequently that some set needs to be more like Cherry, and the ideal legends need to be exactly like Cherry legends.  And GMK's replica sets are not perfect because some symbol is not exactly as it should be on the original, etc.  Now this Vortex set is not exactly like Cherry.  The list goes on.  It's not Cherry, that's my point, and it doesn't need to be to look good.

Ducky Shine legends are centered (left-to-right), large, and Cherry-like.  They look very nice and symmetric.

That's still super interesting. I use their cherry profile dye-sub keycap and I must say that I LOVE them, and they were like 40$ plus shipping with different color for mods? Not perfect, but amazing for the price.

Looks pretty great. Vortex would pull in so much more cash if they just made a legitimate page where you could buy their products (kbtrace doesn't count) that aren't keyboards.

Or you know, actually replied to ANY queries. I've sent them like 5 messages asking about the Poker cases they've been teasing on their FB, not a single reply.

Perhaps the decreased revenue is compensated by the lack of having to hire people to care about the customers.

Damn guys, cant you see how far have Vortex come? Remember that they only had the thisck PBT dyesubs? the Thick PBT DS with the ole weird legends, and now they have a proper font for all keys + 2 tone + white on black sets PBT DS.

Vortex have come long ways, they might call them Cherry legends but they are only Cherry look alike legends in my eyes and I like that a lot, they don't have to be pure copy cat GMK legends, I like that they are different in many ways but yet they look nice and thick unlike SP legends.

Huge props for Vortex, I like what I see so far, they only need the RGBY + Red Esc with white legends to compliment the white on black set.

These looks amazing. I'm not as picky as most of you since its very, very close. That's good enough for me. Double-shot PBT is the ultimate keycap material in my opinion. I hope to see more from Vortex. Maybe they will do a Dolch replica once they find a mold they're willing to stick with.
