Hey.
« on: Tue, 19 November 2013, 09:42:18 »
Just wanted to say hi, seeing as I'm new here. I'm a gamer/programmer/engineer so I am pretty much in front of a keyboard 90% of my life. I made the conversion to mechanical keyboards about two years ago and I'm currently using a Corsair K90 with Cherry MX reds. I love it for gaming, but HATE it for typing. The linear action is just too smooth, I need something to tell me that I have hit the key. As such, I'm in the market for a second board, preferably one with MX blues, so if anyone has any suggestions they would be much appreciated.

Anyway, tangents aside, I'm really excited to see what's up on the rest of the forum!

Nice to meet you all.

Welcome to Geekhack!

For high quality boards, look at Filcos. For something mid-range and cheaper, look at Rosewills.

Unless you're looking for a TKL, then I'd suggest a QFR or Filco TKL.

Thanks.

I'll definitely take a look a the filco's. Also is the Das Keyboard Ultimate S even worth looking at? I've heard great things.

You used a keyboard you hate for two years??

Anyway Filcos are expensive.  So many other great options.  Are you looking for fullsuze, TKL, or mini?

Its not that I hate the keyboard, I love it. Up until now (just started college), I have been usung it mostly for gaming, with occasional typing. Now mostly typing. Its just that typing on it is not the best darn experience out there.

Aldo, I'm looking for a fullsize board.

I just bought a Rosewill RK-9000 from Newegg for half the price that a fullsize Filco would cost.  MX blues would be even cheaper.  I also own a Filco.  The only difference that I can tell is that the Filco has a better looking logo.

Other options are Ducky Shine 3 (mechanicalkeyboards.com) and WASD v2 (wasdkeyboards).  The Das is pretty good although for some reason there aren't many around here so I don't have experience.

Also, if you want a fullsize keyboard that is all about typing... the Unicomp "Modern Model M" is a top choice.  You can even get customized keycaps.

Yeah, I looked at the Rosewill. I have seen a lot of complaining about the mini usb interface. How flimsy/durable is it in reality. I don't want to spend money on anything that will break after a year or so... Thanks.

Welcome to geekhack! I own a Filco Minila and personally love the build quality. However, I too have heard about the potentially sketch mini USB of the Rosewill. With that said, you can always order a non-OEM replacement online for under $5 should it ever konk out on you.

Thanks. I ultimately decided on the Das Keyboard. The build quality is fantastic. I know a lot of people say they don't like the glossy finish, but I think that it looks really slick. Overall fantastic keyboard.
