while a nice rim (car rim) "only" cost around 400 usd.

p.s. its a serious question.

Mass production. If there was a market for cases a Hammer case could probably be had for half as much. Unfortunately CNC time is bloody expensive.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Angles and curves are really costly for cnc. And yeah MOQ and exclusivity. No one wants to work for free.

Rims are casted. Casted aluminum cannot be anodized.

Because all of the CNC case makers are part of a secret alliance which manipulate prices behind our backs.

MOST Rims are casted. Casted aluminum cannot be anodized. The lightest, strongest wheels are forged.

Yep. There is also a one-time setup cost for programming the CNC. The smaller the run, the more each item will cost.

In my other hobby, we often get parts machined from aluminium or steel. It is not unusual that a part of aluminium the size of a keyboard key can cost $50.

Yeah same, in my job some of the parts we deal with are only around the size of your fist or forearm and made from CNC machined components, and are worth hundreds/thousands of dollars. Presumably because they're individually made to order rather than mass production items.

Prototypes are made from unobtanium

I bet this stuff is expensive too
