You broke your phone, too? You and electronics are just not a great combination, you know?

Of course, car innards and I have about that relationship, too. *shrug*

No I didn't break it. It has a problem with its battery not holding a charge. I guess it isn't broken just out of action right now.

Probably solder it back on.

Unless it is too damaged, or damaged in a way that precludes a solder-based fix.

Hence the requirement for a reasonably clear photo to assess the damage.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Unless you are bad with soldering for instance you can always get someone else to solder it on for you. I personally don't think it is that hard to rework the port though.

GL. You'll need to desolder all the switch to get the plate off, so you can get at the leads for the mini-USB. You can do just ESC + 1, but it'll be pain in the butt to get at the bottom 2 leads.

Oh, it isn't throughhole? Those are not horrific to do. Just apply liberal amount of liquid flux, tin the tip, and just drag it down the pins. Just remember to check for solder bridges.

Thanks for the help but it's almost impossible. Even my grandfather who used to do this stuff for a living said it wouldn't be possible. The pins don't stick out at all.

Not impossible just very hard, I have done quite a few of these mini USB's for Tomtom and the likes, I would say as with what Laffindude says just put quite a lot of flux on, also may be worth looking into a new jack with longer pins and or a very fine soldering tip, if all else fails you could always take it to someone who deals with electronics it would be a simple problem as long as no tracks are missing and the earths are not damaged.

just buy a new one. they are under a buck. http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en?FV=fff40016%2Cfff802e4%2C70054b&k=usb+mini&mnonly=0&newproducts=0&ColumnSort=1000011&page=1&stock=0&pbfree=0&rohs=0&quantity=1&ptm=0&fid=0&pageSize=25

dont let a 100+ dollar board go for want of a 1 dollar component.

I would use a nice flathead tip btw, not a fine point. Well tips are great too, but you have to be careful not to damage pads when you drag it across. There are only a few very rare occasions where a fine point tip is the right one for the job.

You can't even get to the pins when the mini usb port is on the pcb. They don't stick out at all. It only seems possible through reflow.

The spacing on the pins is insanely small. It bridges no matter what. Also they don't stick out at all from underneath the jack so I can't even access them.

Humm well looking at it, again coming from my experience with do this on tomtoms it is possible to do it should not at all bridge the connections if you have a clean soldering tip, you should not be putting solder on at all the pads below will be more than enough, unless the pads are very small I suggest build them up slightly with a very small amount of solder, its very easy to burn these off (I have sadly done this mutiple times)

I couldn't see a way of it not being able to be easily fixed as it uses a standard mini USB jack, personally I would have a look into finding someone that deals in electronic repairs someone such as repairing Sat Nav systems or Mobile phones as they will more than likely fix this within a hour, again for what its worth judging on the pictures it is fixable if you where in the UK I would offer to do it for you but Im assuming your not, but best of luck with this.

I would basically be buying this for the soldering challenge to see if I can get it to work.  If you do sell it to me, can you send me a recent photo because I am assuming you have messed with it a bunch since the last photo was taken.  :)  I want to make sure the pads are still attached to the pcb and such...

I'm going to bring it to a cellphone repair shop and see what they can do. If they can't do anything I will be selling the pcb and switches.
