SS 6GV2 broken 'R' switch
« on: Wed, 08 January 2014, 12:31:51 »
Hey,
I've been using my 6g for 2 years now and im lovin it. However, when i was typing for the first time today, i noticed that the R key doesnt respond at all. Every other key is working flawlessy. I can imagine that the switch is having problems because i was cleaning the keycaps the day before and it might be possible that the keycap wasnt completely dry so there was water flouring into the switch. not sure about though. anyway, i dont have any warranty anymore. i was thinking about removing the switch somehow, then remove dust and dirt which might be there and if not i was just going to switch the switch with some other key that i dont really use. i have now idea how to do that though, been doing research for about an hour now but i couldnt find proper information.

help pls.

If water got in the switch just give it a couple days and hopefully it will dry out and continue working.
I've washed out switches and dried them before use. (I washed the switches when they were desoldered already)

If you want to replace the switch, you'll need to do some soldering because the switches are mounted on a plate.

I'm not sure if trying to use the switch with water would even matter. But there is still a chance it hasnt dried yet.

If you remove the keycap and press down on the stem, trying blowing the water out or take a q tip. Hold the keyboard upsidedown, flick the stem rapidly, try to get as much water out before you let it sit.

what i noticed:
i can move the R switch around a bit. while the other switches are pretty steady. could it be possible that the switch isnt poked into the keyboard properly? and if so, what to do?

I think that the 6gv2 is plate mounted. You would have to desolder every switch on the keyboard to change that one switch

You do not have to desolder the entire keyboard to replace one switch. You only need to replace the one switch and that is all. If you are not confident enough to do solder yourself, see if you have any tv or guitar repair or anything at all similar nearby that would repair it for you. Any of those kind of places should have someone that is fairly proficient at soldering... or at least one would hope.
