Hi all!
I've just recently discovered Geekhack, but have been involved with mechanical keyboards for quite a while, and the addiction has hit so this seems like the right place for me.
My first (modern) mechanical was a Razer Blackwidow Ultimate Limited Edition Dragon Age II a couple of years ago. Back then, when I'd decided to get a keyboard that was more like the keyboards of olde I had used, I wanted one with red backlighting, as this was usually what I had my old POS Saitek set to. But every board I checked back then came in blue lighting only, except for one board that came in green. I hate blue backlighting. I don't get the attraction, and I certainly didn't get why every keyboard manufacturer back then only did blue. But Razer produced a limited edition BlackWidow with red backlighting and, more importantly, it was in stores locally, so I got it.
I know Blackwidows get a lot of hate these days, but two years down the road and it's never let me down. However, once I started getting more interested in mechanicals a few months ago I wanted to try some more options. So I went to a Ducky Shine II with reds and white backlighting. Hated it. Reds are not a good typing keyboard. And Shine 3's came out a few weeks later. So I moved to a Shine 3 with blues and red backlighting. But the itch was not able to be scratched, and the curiosity over Cherry greens caused me to buy a TK with greens in a Black Friday sale.
I never previously got the attraction of the smaller boards, but I have found I prefer the smaller size of the TK. And I prefer greens to blues, but I'm a pretty heavy typer. Still, the itch isn't going away, and I'm still seeking my perfect keyboard.
I should add I also have a collection of old keyboards that I picked up along the way. Three Mitac off-white Alps (cream?) boards, one Mitac white Alp, an Omron with oranges, and a diminutive Focus 767 with blue Alps. I also have an Apple II+, a TRS80 Model 1, a Commodore 64, an Amiga, and an Acorn Electron, which all have interesting keyboards.
I think my favourite is the blue Alps. Despite all my modern boards being Cherry's, I can't help but think the Alps switches just sound nicer. So I've very keen to see what Matias comes up with as I love that he brought back that switch.
My ultimate board (currently) would be a TKL in a close-fit aluminium gun-metal grey case, and Matias clicky switches with programmable RGB backlighting with black key-caps similar the TRS80 Model 1's.
Okay, I should stop, this introduction has gone way past boring. :-)
