Poor quality Filco Doubleshot ABS Keycaps
« on: Thu, 16 October 2014, 15:17:05 »
Hi,

I was (and am still) searching for new keycaps for my Filco MT2 Ninja. .... and well - I ordered the Filco Doubleshot (ABS) Keycaps, because it's very hard to find thick pbt caps with German Layout.

Today the arrived and I am very dissapointed: The keycaps came with scratches right out of the box and the enter key has a very uneven surface. The right shift key has some stripes etc. ... I am really pi**ed off.

I think I will send them back to keyboardco, but the shipping would be my own cost (why the hell?).

So - please never order this crap... have a look at it:

Today I ordered Ducky thick PBT ... blank, but in a cool grey blue iso layout. ... I hope they will be better.

The only one which is justified is this one : http://imgbox.com/uoicQvjo

Which is a sprue mark from the mould. Not much can be done about that.

The rest though.. Damn, bad QC.

I have two filcos and they are a bit pricey, but overall well built keyboards... except for the keycaps. They do indeed suck a fat one. Sorry you found out the hard way too. I went to blanks for a while because they are easier to find. You should be able to find an even nicer alternative around here though.

And this is a Japanese company...
Yesterday I was cleaning my Model M keycaps... 30 years old... Very old technology... But another world!!!
I am very sorry for you but I say you a BIG thank you for writing this post: I think Filco Company should send you a new, perfect, set free of charge!!! If they are able to do a perfect set... :(

Keycaps are manufactured by a US company - Signature Plastics - not Diatec themselves.

If they are sold with Filco brand, as official Filco product, is a Filco responsibility...

Nice to know that SP has these problems... :(

I hope that this one was an isolated case but is not correct that the only one to lose is the final user...
PBT forever!

It's weird to me, SP usually has very good QC.

I'll do some investigating for you on the Japanese forums.

I have received the same keycaps set a few days ago and mine seem perfect, no scratches, nothing. Strange!

Hi,

thanx for all your feedback.

I decided to send the keycaps back and get my money back. Won't be a big problem (I hope so).

As a replacement I ordered a set of blank blue and grey ducky thick pbt keycaps - I really hope they will be great :)

Any chance you're willing to sell your original keycaps once you find a suitable replacement? I bought an MJ2 with (mostly) blanks and I love the front facing look, but can't find any aftermarket stuff I like.

Look harder. There's so many sets that you're bound to find one you like.

There's really not. Most of them either have LED windows or obnoxious branding, or both. ABS or not, I'm rather keen on the look of the stock Filco front-facing, and can't find anything like them.

Damn, really sucks to see that the quality of these caps is pretty crap. And they appear to have such a nice profile, shame. Maybe you just got a bad batch or something, who knows.
