Good matte tenkeyless keyboard for office use
« on: Mon, 03 February 2014, 07:23:18 »
After thinking about it for more than two years I've finally decided to get myself together and buy a mechanically keyboard.

The thing is, there is a lot of options and since I know you guys have a lot of build up knowledge and experience with these things I'm simply going to ask instead of spending a half life researching: What matte tenkeyless keyboard for programming in a office environment would you recommend? I live in denmark and would prefer to purchase something that's as good value for money without ridiculous shipping prices (as far as I can see however mechanical keyboards are generally more expensive in Europe).

I'm considering the WASD keyboard since you can customize the keycaps (pretty cool), the Filco Ninja with its cool labels and the CM Storm QuickFire Rapid for it's lower price.

Lots of guys use this baby right here:

I can't vouch for it, but it seems to get a lot of love due to its Topre switches.

I think the problem with this board is he is looking for a TKL and it seems like he also wants a reasonably priced mx board.

I would get the qfr if you want to be more budget or a if not filco. I don't know much about the shipping and price in denmark but they are both really good boards.

Does the Topre switches really justify the price? It's quite a bit more expensive than the Filco Ninja Majestouch.

I'm don't necessarily have to be on a budget. But it like to get something for my money. So if the difference in quality between QFR and Filco is negligibly (which it appears some people think) then I won't go for the Filco.

How about a Ducky Shine 3 TKL and sideprinted PBT caps?

https://www.teraset.net/product_details.php?p=10032#.Uu-he7TG9pg
The Ducky actually looks quite good with the overlay.

But the price 149.00 € + 39.00 € ~= 254$
At keyboardco a Filco Ninja is £100 ~= 163$
and a WASD v2 is $145.00 (without shipping).

IMHO, the LAYOUT justifies the price.  (and the feel is pretty darned good as well)

I'm not sure why you think so. Having nothing instead of control seems like a waste (I use Colemak where caps lock is delete). And even though I though I like a compact keyboard I think removing the function and arrow keys is a bit too extreme.

I mentioned the Ducky since it has full backlighting, is great quality (on par with the Filco, IMHO) and is available in Nordic ISO layout. The keycaps set is PBT, which is more "matte" than ABS and won't start to shine as fast as ABS caps. Since the store is in EU you won't have to pay high shipping or import costs.

The QFR uses cheaper components, but overall is still decent quality. The difference is noticeable to me, but not all that big. The QFR is very good value for money.

The Filco is great quality, really solid and I think it's worth the extra cost over the QFR, personally.

This company is in UK, so at least you won't have to pay import duties:

http://www.keyboardco.com/keyboard/swedish-finnish-filco-ninja-majestouch-2-tenkeyless-nkr-tactile-action-keyboard.asp

The Ducky keycaps set will fit the Filco, in case you prefer the more matte PBT.

Backlighting is not important to me since I touch type. And I use Colemak so and american layout is actually closer to what I'm using, but again it's unimportant since I don't look at the keys. But I do think the PBT looks very good!

I'm leaning towards the Filco Ninja at the moment since it's cheaper, seems to be considered of high quality, and can be bought in Europe.

But cost 60% more than Filco and I find the there to be too much empty plastic at the top. But I'll look a bit more into it :)

Yeah it is a little bigger cause its more of a classic style to it. If you know anyone who has one try it out and see, its not for everyon.  But those who do like them like them a lot.

Can you please tell me why you say Filco is better than QFR?  One of the videos I saw of someone here comparing both keyboards, they are both the same.  Also, both made by costar I believe.

Good to hear! What is the color of the switches? Any complaints from co workers regarding sound/noise?

Oh. Sorry for the misunderstanding, but I wasn't thinking about your remarks. I was reading elsewhere on this forum and a bunch of people stated that the higher price for the Filco was due to brand and other thinks that don't really matter.

Better quality parts. The PCB is high quality, dual sided with SMD components, QFR is single sided with through-hole. Possibly tighter tolerances and better materials on the plate and case, too.

About the switches, if it's your first mechanical I'd definitely go for Browns. They are light, but tactile, no click. They are great at everything (typing, gaming, etc), although Blues may feel nicer to some for typing and some may prefer Reds for gaming, the Browns can do it all.

Thanks Oobly.   I did purchase Quickfire Stealth.  Now I'm having regrets not getting Filco since I didn't know this. :\  The Quickfire Stealth key caps don't feel that great either, seems like something is missing when typing on the stock key caps.

I used my Realforce 87u Silent in the office and I loved it. Feels great and extremely quiet as to not disturb others. I can fully justify the extra price when it comes to Topre > MX in my opinion. That said, I have multiple of both, depends on my mood what I want to use that day.

Denmark. I'm not sure blue is suitable for an office environment though.

Yes, the silence of Topre is definitely an advantage. But now I'm also considering Matias Mini Quiet Pro. It's shiny which I really don't like, but it's silent and even though some people think the switches are even better than Topre is significantly cheaper.

Actually, when I asked about Topre, I was told that the Realforce offers the worst typing experience, with the HHKB and FC660C said to be both significantly better because of the different mounting.
I can also say that the overly large, Model M-esque bezel is unattractive to me, but my preference is a clean look and not bloated.

That is interesting, So far my favorite switch for typing is tope 45g.  If topre is not good for typing then what is it good for? its definitly not a gaming switch.

Nah. I'm not getting a Razer.

I'm really starting to think about the Matias. The layout looks great, and beside it's shine people tend to like it a lot. But Filco sounds like a "saver" choice so I'm not shure.

Now I'm pretty sure I'll buy the Matias Quiet bluetooth version. The idea of being able to use the keyboard with my phone and tablet is wonderful. The shiny silver is damn ugly but painting it is an option.
