spilled iced tea on ducky keyboard
« on: Fri, 14 February 2014, 01:10:32 »
hello, i spilled some ice tea on my ducky keyboard that i paid about $160 for and everything works but the space, right shift, and enter keys are sticky! they dont snap back up quickly when pressed, what can i do?? any website i can send this to, so they can repair it? I dont think i can do it myself as i think the sticky liquid has gone inside the actual key switch.. IF there is no hope, can i at least sell it? Would anyone buy a keyboard in this condition (with large discount of course) ?

hmm.... its going to be a real waste to throw away this expensive keyboard just because of a few sticky keys. But is that the only option im left with?

It sounds like you've had it easy in that the keyboard still works fine.

You have a number of options, all relatively easy
1) Pop the keycaps off and try to give them a clean (probably won't work, depends on level of spillage)

Invasive:
======
If you do decide to open the keyboard you can give the pcb a gentle wipe with isopropyl alcohol

2) Use a cherry switch tool to open the switch and try to clean the switch itself using some alcohol rub (I use isopropyl alcohol) (may require contact re-soldering if the switch becomes loose if you're not careful)

3) Alternatively, cheery switch's are fairly inexpensive: replace the switch itself, relatively straightforward (will require soldering)

Duckys are plate mounted, so this will definately require desoldering. You can't open a plate mounted switch if it's not a plate with the proper cutouts.

So yeah desolder the sticky switches and replace them or open and clean them, then solder them back in. If you don't want to or can't do this yourself, you can find some people here who can help you out.
