Rate and compare your mouse coating/surface!
« on: Sat, 01 March 2014, 04:49:07 »
Forget the mouse tear-down! First impressions and superficial looks are everything!
1) Objectively or Subjectively, how would you guys rate the surface quality/coating of the various mouse peripherals you've used?
2) In general how would you stack the surface quality/coating of each peripheral company against each other (roccat, zowie, steelseries, logitech, razer, cm, ttesports & etc)?

Since we're talking about looks and to make this more interesting, give it a good number rating or use mathematical symbols ( i.e. > or < or = )
Remember we're talking about external quality only, don't rate based on mouse internals or sensors!
Also list how long you've used each one because sweat, oil and other stuff can be a factor too!
May the best beauty and fair maiden win.

Edit: List everything you've used. Compare and contrast to the best of your ability.

My Logitech G602 has the best balance of coatings on any mouse I've ever had.

My Logitech G602 has the best balance of coatings on any mouse I've ever had.

I saw that at best buy today while I was picking up a mousepad.
It was secured and tilted upwards on a shelf but I like the top coating especially that middle part. Feels nice.
Too bad I couldn't really play with it.
What else have you used?

Ok so my Cooler Master CM Storm Xornet I've had since around Christmas 2012, the coating feels REALLY good BUT, there are gripy points on the sides that I like even more, and I really like the look of it as well :) all in all a nice mouse.

I also have a Microsoft trackball Explorer 1.0  This trackball has lasted forever, I'm not even sure when I got it o.O But I've loved using it the feel of the materials isn't that nice, but because of the shape of it it's kind of irrelevant, a great mouse,

and lastly I have a Logitech MX 400, the feel of the materials I don't really like, and after a few years, it has rubbed off quite severely unlike the Trackball Explorer, which is still almost like new. Shame really as it is a decent mouse, just not up to a standard I would like.
I like the keyboards... I feel we all do.

Love that, Razer DA2013: plasticky POS 2/10, you still are being too generous with them  8) .

Of course the G400 is Logitech's cheapest optical mouse and it's stood the test of time.  I am liking the G400S a little more each day as it shows me why Logitech can make decent input devices if they put a little effort into it  :thumb: .

So where does your Mionix factor into this?

I forgot to contribute:
I'm going to use a scale system from 1-5.
1 is garbage.
3 being a typical Logitech office mouse.
5 is great surface.

I've at least used these devices for more than a hour while I was actually doing something:
Logitech G9X - 3. Could easily be a 4 if Logitech actually tweaked some stuff.
Logitech G400 - 3 Could easily be a 4 if Logitech wasn't either so stuck up or 5 if Logitech wasn't (what I assume to be) bureaucratically mismanaged.
SteelSeries Sensei - 1. Frying pan coated cheapness. It looks so cheap even a god of misfortune/poverty wouldn't go near it.
SteelSeries Rival - 2. Dear lord, why did they think dark rubber could hide smudge marks. Looks like **** after it absorbs oil, grease from your skin.
Razer Diamondback - 2. Cheap Rubber. Smudges. Cheap cheap cheap
Razer Deathadder - 2 Cheap Rubber. Smudges. Cheap cheap cheap. Looks like **** after it absorbs oil, grease from your skin.
Razer Imperator  - 3
Zowie EC EVO CL - 3. Rubber top discolors, Plastic sides feel cheap. Color concept is nice but it's not actually that pleasing when you actually see the mouse. I'd bump this up if it didn't scream cheapppp.
TT Esports M10 - Materials - 4. Visual appeal - 1. This mouse actually has a decent quality surface and body. It just looks like a kid's toy with those stupid side buttons.
Gigabyte Aivia Krypton - 3. I like what they tried to do with this mouse but it uses cheap plastic and cheap rubber.
I'm probably forgetting some devices.

Overall I'd rate the major companies like this
Logitech > Zowie ≥ Razer > Steelseries

I think Zowie only has a slight lead above Razer because the mouse's underside is surprisingly good looking.

I really like the coating used on Logitech G600, parts of the G602, G700s, Razer Naga 2012, DA2013 and I'd assume several other of the current Razer and Logitech offerings. It's far more durable than any other coating. My DA2013 and Naga are just now starting to show slight signs of wear on the coating, and that's after quite a lot of use. My MS-3 and Level10 M both have the standard rubberized coating most mice seem to use, and they started showing signs of wear within the first hour or so.
I don't sweat much, and I wash my hands often, so my mice don't get too much sweat and oil on them and it generally takes a while for any serious wear to show. I still can't actually see any wear marks on the G600(white) coating no matter what angle/light I look at it from, despite being used for probably the majority of my GW2 time. Naga has been used more, and is showing slight signs of wear on the mouse buttons, but it's nowhere near the amount of wear on something like my MS-3 after only a week or so.

Also, for some reason I really like the feeling of the cheapo-feeling plastic used in the IME 3.0 and MS/Razer Habu.

If I'm gonna put numbers to them I'd probably rate the Logitech mice at around 4 or 5, with Razer falling behind slightly at 3 or 4 since I'm still a bit undecided on the shiny plastic thing. I don't like it, but it does offer a surprising amount of grip. And the rubbery sides on the DA2013 aren't really sticky enough to be useful.
Most other mice I'd probably rate at around average, since they either use meh plastic or the same ****ty rubber coating that wears off after half an hour that everyone uses.

The best looking mouse I own, though, is the Razer Lachesis I think. I really like the long, sleek look of it. The TT Level10 M would also be a contender, but they stuck a bunch of useless junk on it. Like that square light on the button, or the ugly side buttons. The shape towards the front of it is also a bit... Off.

For me personally

Neutral: Any mouse with a simple ABS plastic. Also including UV coating or mice with minimal texture on their plastic surfaces. Examples are different variations of deathadder, WMO, G400, Rocat Savu.

Worst: Any mouse with a rubberized coating. Not meaning actual rubber grips. Examples are... 90% of gaming mice produced nowadays. Some are worse than others.

Best: Any mouse with a glossy coating. Though one glossy coating is not as good as the other. Examples are Deathadder transformers edition, Zowie EC1 Evo white.

First, I hate glossy plastic. I simply refuse to touch that ****, no to mention eye-straining reflections. Probably the only exception to the rule is the good old Logitech LX3, but those have been discontinued/dead for quite a while. I mean, I dislike even glossy parts, such as buttons on the old Logitech Marble Mouse.

Second, rubber coating is usually horrible. I mean, I have a sticky old Roccat Kone lying around and it's disgusting. So was the Logitech Wireless TrackMan Optical, when I got rid of it. I like only a decent touch like on Roccat Savu (the middle part) or actual rubber as in case of CM Storm Xornet (side grips).

Finally, there are those sandpaper-like surfaces (e.g. side grips on Roccat Savu, A4Tech Oscar or the Precision shell for Logitech G9x); I like them a lot, when done right (Roccat Savu).

Apart from that, I don't mind the "metallic" plastic used on Logitech mice (G300 M500, TrackMan Wheel/Marble, G9x itself (the Comfort grip feels greasy)), but ordinary smooth matte finish is much better (Zowie MiCO, Roccat Pyra, CM Storm Xornet). Not ordinary ABS plastic though, as e.g. WMO or MTO get glossy eventually, and need sandblasting to feel okay again.
