Hi GH!
« on: Wed, 12 February 2014, 06:43:46 »
I'm a long time reader who just got started doing my own builds and mods.

I just finished up buiding an ErgoDox and I did a writeup of my experience here:

http://adereth.github.io/blog/2014/02/12/building-an-ergodox/

I use a Kinesis Advantage LF as my primary driver at work and a Kinesis Advantage modified with Cherry MX Blues at home.  I'm really interested in building a highly portable ergonomic keyboard that I can use with my laptop when traveling and I'd appreciate any ideas or recommendations.

Welcome!

Curious about your WASD keycaps; it looks from the first photo on your write-up that they didn't quite match the Ergodox key sizes, but at the end, the fit looks great! Did you get additional keys apart from the standard kit?

I'm looking into getting a set from WASD myself for my Ergodox, hence my interest.

The fit is fine, but I ended spending way too much to get the additional 1.5x and 2x1 keys.  I'm also not as happy with the profiles of the keys and I think that the uniform profile of the DSA PBT.

Upon reflection, I should have gotten these:

$43 for a full ErgoDox set makes a lot more sense.  I just can't recommend WASD for an ErgoDox set.  I did ask them if they'd consider offering one for a reasonable price and they said that their stock just doesn't allow for it.

Thanks for the keycap info; that addresses the concerns I had had about them.

Regarding a portable Bluetooth keyboard, what layout do you anticipate using (40%,60%...)? I have given up on finding an ergonomic BT board and am instead using a generic folding board from Stowaway. It's scissor switches, but solid build quality and folds in half for pocketability. (Also, only costs $30 on eBay.) I use it only on the bus, though, so ergonomics isn't as huge an issue.

(they have a four-part folding 5-row too, but it's harder to find.)
