Nokia to debut Android smartphone in February - WSJ report http://cir.ca/s/VeJ

Just saw this after I took a massive crapper. I think that's quite fitting since this isn't stock android and we all know how well forked android's update.

Nokia agreed in February 2011 to use Microsoft's Windows Phone exclusively in its smartphones. The Lumia 800, Nokia's first Windows Phone device, debuted in October 2011.

Doesn't matter what they do internally or leak, I don't think it will ever see the light of consumer's days.

No, this seems real. Evleaks is spot on most of the time.

This phone is running a forked version of android without google play (market) with a bunch of built in microsoft services. This is going to be a hardware push into the emerging markets.

Yup, it's looking more and more likely to happen.

And amazingly it's in Nokia's right to do, since the "sale" agreement with MS only covers "smartphones", but "feature phones" are open for Nokia to go wild with. It'll be part of Nokia's Asha lineup.

I am astounded.

There are such things as Nokia fans still? Isn't that company bankrupt or on its way to bankruptcy?

Still making money from feature phones, maps / navigation and networks :) Just making a loss in smartphones, the division MS has offered to buy (deal still not finalised).

x2. The best feature of the old Nokia phones...

Oh the nostalgia...

EDIT: On that notion, they should add a "Nostalgia mode" app to these Nokia phones that emulate the old monochrome Nokias.

Yup, I'm waiting to see if they release a good "other half" keyboard for the Jolla. It has a lot of potential, but the system is still not quite release ready. I loved my N900 and was waiting for the N950 (I worked in Nokia and used prototypes in my daily work), but ended up with a Samsung Android instead. MeeGo and Meltemi would have made a helluva great combination with so many possibilities. So sad.

And Microsoft is not making this phone. In fact Microsoft doesn't make any phones at the moment. Nokia still makes them all until the deal is finalised and then, IF it goes through, Microsoft will still only make Windows Phone devices (without the Nokia branding), while Nokia will make this device and other "feature" phones.

There's also Tizen, but I fear Samsung won't make it too exciting for fear of diminishing their massive Android market share.

Titzen sucks. It's vaporware. And HTML5? Meh... They've been "working" on it with Intel for quite a while without any visible results. Actually, I've seen a developer device and... meh once again.

IMHO, it's due to their build quality, design, good hardware. And the fact that their other business areas have been making profit even when their smartphones have been making big losses.

I don't know how much their other business weight, but I have a hard time imagining they sold a single phone for a decade now :p

I probably still have my 3310 somewhere tho !

Well.... they announced 3!!!? Android devices at MWC yesterday!

The X, the X+ and the XL. The X+ looks like the best one to buy at around 110€, but I have to admit that I really hate the tiles interface and the fact it doesn't run the Play store, so you have to use Nokia store, Yandex or sideload your apps. Build quality and design are both great, though.

The specs are really low end, but for some reason Stephen Elop still called them "smartphones" in his announcement. I mean, if you're making Android "smartphones", make at least one with decent specs and preferably actually allow the main features of the OS to be used (customizability).

It all looks like being a case of "far too little, far too late".

I still quite like Nokia. If they'd do an Android phone I'd consider it. The Samsung ones look nasty to me, are loaded with bloatware, yet seem to outsell every other phone on the market so there's no accounting for taste.

AGREED.
I'm dismayed at how well Samsung sells. It is such a shame because most people i know use those bloated phones and think Android sucks without realizing that they've been using something that's been heavily skinned, customized and is extremely slow/unresponsive as a result. The first time I used a Samsung android phone I though it was the slowest POS.

The bloat ware and lack of updates (well blame American carriers) is why I only use Nexus phones.

I am really glad we have Google play edition phones, although they are not completely stock devices in the way nexus devices are and don't update as quickly.

I'd use a quality Nokia phone with stock android or at least a Google Play Edition approach.

The bloat ware isn't actually that bad, the reason they sell so well is becasue they are just so complete as devices, they do it all.

The reason they sell well is because of samsung's aggressive marketing and most consumers are not that tech savvy.
I can hardly say that a samsung phone is a complete device, especially if you've used another phone.
They are some of the most unpolished android devices out there.
That's not to say that samsung products are a complete POS but I wish they did a better job.
Especially since Samsung is the primary competition for Apple, I really wish Samsung's products were leaner and smoother.
The bloatware is really bad. You don't have that smooth "buttery" experience on Samsung bloated products.
There is no comparison if you've ever used an iPhone, which is smooth and intuitive (for low tech users) vs a Samsung.
You can even see how much responsive a stock/google play edition device performs vs a Samsung.

Not sure really what planet your from.

I've been an iPhone user for 4yrs now and have an use daily an iPhone 5. iOS is a massive piece of unfinished garbage with more problems than apps.
There (Apple) hardware, while pretty and the best looking by far has poor build quality and I've been though several phones simply getting them replaced becasue of broken/badly designed buttons (and I'm not alone in this).

While I'm not suggesting that the Galaxy line of phones are perfect, becasue if they were I would probably own one. But they are perfectly smooth (the top end versions anyway) and very usable, and while I'm personally not all too familiar with Android the market place has spoken and it rules the roost.
I would agree that really until the S5 there phones have been made from nasty plastics that look and feel like total and utter ****. It's part of the reason I never got an S4.

But thanks to Apple cluster ****ing all there customers with the new port on there phones, which ruins all compatibility with all docks and 3rd party hardware (which was partly why I invested in an iPhone originally anyway) unless you open your anus to Apple and get raped by there horribly over-priced and horrible made cables (of which I'm almost on my 3rd within a year and a half). And the cluster **** that is the new iOS which has made my iPhone 5, slow, prone to crashing, laggy and unresponsive.

What planet am I from?
Well it's actually listed under my name.

More
If you're going to ask what planet I'm from then ... I don't possibly see how you can use a Samsung and say oh the bloatware is absolutely fine. Have you ever used stock android?
I really don't know how you can draw that comparison and then come to the conclusion that bloatware "isn't all that bad".

Samsung products well let me throw HTC in here too are terrible.
They're slow, sluggish, bloated with **** that drain your overhead and battery.
If you're complaining about how bad your iPhone 5 has gotten - I don't think you've used a Samsung extensively enough.
If you think Apple is incomplete and a POS, then I don't see how you can consider Samsung's touchUI + android customization not to be a dumbed down, gimped OS.
These are phones are hardly suitable for use, unless you give them a good flash (or buy the google play edition ... or turn them into one via flashing)
Oh speaking of flashing, did I mention what a piece of **** proprietary firmware and bootloaders are?

Speaking of anus opening, when you buy a Samsung phone. You're going to be stuck on that version of Android that your phone comes with.
You're not going to get timely updates on your phone, if any at all.

I advocate you use nexus products.

They are fine becasue they work as smooth if not smoother than my iPhone 5. I would opt for an S5 over a Nexus phone simply becasue they review better and people who spend too much time caring about phones use them daily and recommend them, at least people who I put any value in there opinion.

You cannot truly have an opinion of anything like a phone until you've used it for over a year or so, which is why it's really hard to have a meaningful opinion about them, but from my brief flirt with many Android phones the S5 looks to be the most interesting and probably best.

To bring it back on topic, I'm still bummed that Nokia didn't announce a proper high end Android phone as there handsets are by far the best looking non iPhone, phone. But given that, I think the next best phone on the market would be something like the S4 or something similar..

Happy to see nokia Entering the Android market but I an very very Sceptical.

From the Nokia staff I know the android version they will be running is not going to be like what samsung, HTC and the like run it will be stripped and not featuring all the apps and such so will not be as fully featured as other android devices.

This all might change but i will be keeping my eyes on this till they are out fully
