There have been some awesome steampunk keyboards.

If I ever had a few truly "spare" days I would really love to try one, but it would really make the most sense with a Model F, you know, do a new front plate in brass .....

If the XTant project ever really came true, I would definitely build mine with a steampunk flavor.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

If there are people willing to plunk down $400 for an SSK, I think they would do better to buy something like this. At least, it's better value.

Eh.  If you make something like that and you're not doing it on commission, don't expect someone to willingly plop down a **** ton of money on it.  You have to know your market and what they're willing to pay and the "steampunk" market is rather small, not always the most high paying, and usually done on commission.

Of course, that one doesn't look too bad, but he has a silver and gold one he wants almost $400 for that, IMO, look like crap.

Sorry, this looks like crap.  The original case is still there just painted to look like wood, and it's surrounded by a cheap wood framing.

The trick to get the old typewriter buttons on the BS stems is a time consuming one, but the effect here is less than astounding.

The one(s) done in steampunk style like what fohat posted are much nicer.

That's exactly what I was thinking. He just made a wooden case back, and painted/dyed the original case to look similar. If you're going to customize a Model M into a "steampunk" keyboard, do it the right way. This one just looks like crap.

I love the idea of these. The IBM Clicky one looks good. I gotta agree that the silver & gold ones look really gross.

I agree the silver and gold look like cheap vinyl over the original keyboard. But for keyboard referred to in the OP, this isn't real wood?

Sigh. I live in a country where even sand (YES, sand!) is a rare commodity and smuggled in under cover of night, literally stolen from neighboring countries. So my eyes aren't used to seeing real wood...  :p

I did not notice that.  Yea, that is a cheap shortcut.
