Sudden interest in custom keyboards!
« on: Sun, 02 March 2014, 16:37:37 »
Hello there! I'm a 21 year old guy from Norway and i suddenly got a real interest in custom keyboards. I have always been a huge fan of mechanical keyboards and I recently made a part list for my phantom build. (link below)
I hope I will find some friends here that I can discuss keyboards (and other stuff) with. At the moment I'm sadly stuck with my Razer Black Widow which I'm not really pleased with, can't really say I'm a fan of MX blues.

I would really appreciate any comments/feedback on my phantom build, like what I should do differently or maybe some personal input, just give me ideas.

Also if anyone has a ISO WIN (ISO 125) plate for sale I would love to have it for my phantom!

I bet you can get switches considerably cheaper by buying an old board and desoldering them all. Or maybe someone on Geekhack/Deskthority would sell you the switches.

Or heck, buy them cheaper new from almost anywhere else.

Thanks for the tip, but I think I'll stick to my list as i prefer to have all my documents in one easy to access everywhere place.
And i actually prefer the simple spreadsheet design. And my list is already done so why bother making a new one?

Well I know i probably could get cheaper switches other places but what the heck, and the link you sent me didn't specify what type of switch it was?

MX1A-11NN is Cherry MX Black

Here’s digikey ($70/100): http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/MX1A-11NN/CH162-ND/91136

I think they’re also sometimes here in reasonable size packages for <$1/switch http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_list&c=54

But seriously, if you watch the 'classifieds' section, there are often people selling used switches.

Or if you browse around ebay and you’re willing to do some desoldering, you can often find old keyboards with MX black switches. I’m not sure how many will ship cheaply to Norway though.
