Cherry brown keys break-in time?

Hey, I've just got a Truly Ergonomic keyboard. The left spacebar and a few keys near it (b, c tab) are failing to fire about 1/3 of the time when clicked. Some other keys elsewhere are failing to register sometimes as well. The dealer suggested it might just need breaking in, but I'm doubtful about this. Any opinions?

That shouldn't be happening. I've never known Cherry switches to need break-in time to actually register. Usually "breaking in" Cherry switches just means smoothing out the stroke. If I got a board with switches that failed to register I'd return it as faulty.

Thanks. They also suggested upgrading the firmware so I'll try that, but if that doesn't work I'm returning it. Shame, it feels like quite a nice keyboard, I'll probably try to get a replacement rather than money back.

Definitely start with making sure the firmware is current.

Surprisingly, doing a custom layout gives you firmware that is more recent (3.31) than the "current" firmware (3.16) listed on their site.

My opinion: the dealer is full of ****. I've never had a new keyboard that needed to be broken in for all the keys to work.

If I were you, I'd keep complaining to the dealer and see if you can return it in exchange for another.

I just got a TECK too. IMHO, part of the break-in process is fingers getting used to the new keys.

In working with this board I've learned that the guy working on the firmware has been paying attention to bounce detection issues. That could be what's going on here. That's why I suggested to make sure the firmware is current first. If it's still a problem and you're sure the keys are being hit correctly, then definitely push the dealer for a replacement.

I'm just sitting with a text editor hitting space with one finger 20 times in a row slowly and getting much less than 20 spaces, so I don't think it's to do with adjusting to the keyboard, I'm pretty doubtful that firmware has anything to do with this, but I may as well give it a try.

I never had to break in my Browns. They were perfect out of the box. I suppose it's gotten a little smoother since I bought it last year, but maybe that's just been my experience. Perhaps your case is an isolated example.

Almost sounds to me like a bad solder job.  If it was a firmware issue I would think the symptom would be extra key presses instead of not enough.  Either way, to me it sounds like the dealer is trying to string you along until the warranty runs out.

Firmware upgrade didn't help. I'm sending it back and asking for a replacement, we'll see what happens. Thanks for your thoughts on this, confirmed my feeling that this wasn't a "breaking-in" thing.

Make sure you get an RMA before you send it back. Most companies will reject returned items without an RMA out of hand, which will just waste your time and money. Be sure you share what you've told us. It definitely sounds like a defect.

You've made the mistake of dealing with Truly Ergonomic, because they're full of it.

If you search the ergonomics subforum, there are several complaints about soldering/firmware, thus I guess you should have been warned, especially considering the non-existent support.

Hi,

I have found that when inputting text into certain online, say forum, reply boxes, I get many missed keystrokes and strange behaviour when highlighting with the mouse. So make sure it isn't the website's fault, because I can narrow the problem down, in my case, to certain websites.
