Bolt mod question
« on: Wed, 12 March 2014, 12:14:29 »
Ok here is a couple pics of the plate on the M that I bought.  I want to bolt mod it mostly for the experience on doing it plus the top plastic plate needs more cleaning than just a simple wipe down.  It looks like a combination of a gamer that lived at his PC (more crud around the wasd cluster) and a short hair cat has been sleeping on it for 10 years.  All of the keys actuated clean except for the 7 on the number pad.

Label on the back

57217-0

The board chow.

57219-1
57221-2

The back of the plate with a couple broken rivets.

57223-3
57225-4
57227-5
57229-6

Would you guys consider this a good candidate for a bolt mod?  Also are the 2-56 or the 2mm x .4 screws preferred?  If there is really no preference I was planning on going with the 2-56 just because I will be needing some of those for M-64 including tap and other stuffs.

I have found Ripsters bolt mod guide and seems detailed enough that I should be able to pull it off.

Any other tips I should be aware of?  I already have this thing apart as far as I can go before destructive means would be necessary.

Every Model M is a great candidate for a bolt mod.  Even ones without broken rivets because those rivets will break eventually.

I think the 2 mm x .4 works great, and that is what I have been using.  The length and head type will depend on how you want to do a bolt mod, and what row you plan to do.
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

I was planning on doing a FULL disassembly and remove all the plastic rivets.  It isn't that it feels bad but I mostly want to do it for the experience of doing it.  While I am at it would you guys reccommend replacing all the springs and hammers?  Unicomp has them for $0.20 each.

I guess I need to look up actual diameters between the M2 and the 2-56.

About spring and hammers - if it isn't broken, don't try to fix it :) In my experience, it's the most sturdy part of buckling spring switch.
