Hello from a Croatian in Seattle
« on: Wed, 05 March 2014, 23:46:45 »
Hi everyone!

I've been lurking around the forum for a while but only decided to register a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, I too have a great love for keyboards and enjoy swapping them real often in search for the one that will suite me perfectly. I'm really glad I found this forum, now I can prove my girlfriend that I am not alone.

At the moment and until late April I am in Seattle/Kirkland on an internship. Originally I'm from Croatia, so quite a long way from home.
I'm typing on a IBM Space Saver II, and my Lenovo X220 laptop. I've been a fan of rubber domes and small format keyboards ever since I can remember, but I've decided to give it another go with mechanical ones, so I'm also checking what's for sale on a daily basis :)

The only game I play is Tetris, other than that I'm using keyboards exclusively for typing/programming.

Welcome!
Of course you should try mechanical keyboards ;) They are great for heavy typists, and you are one if you are a programmer.

My personal favourite is buckling spring switches so I can recommend it... if you don't mind noise. And if your girlfriend don't mind it :)
But nowadays you can find mechanical keyboard which is both nice to type on AND silent.

Seattle is a great town, especially if you're footloose and fancy free!  (Okay, skip the last part...)  I was in Bellevue for a couple of years, and spent a lot of time going downtown, riding the ferries, and hiking in the mountains.

There are a lot of nice mechanical keyboards out there to try, you may want to get a switch tester to try some different ones, see what you like.  Post a wishlist for your "perfect keyboard" and I'm sure you'll get a lot of suggestions!

Welcome to the forum!

Thanks guys!

Oh wow, I had no idea those switch testers existed! I'll see if I can find one for cheap, though I guess it can't compare with actually trying to type on a keyboard.

At the moment I'm seriously considering getting a Leopold FC660m. Would like to try out Topre switches, but too expensive for me, need to keep it at ~100$ range :)

Yep, they are. But... there are no switch testers for Buckling Spring switches, for example, and they are the best (in my humble opinion). But... if you can find an old IBM Model M in your vicinity, you can actually feel it. And Unicomp keyboards are about 80$ if you'll buy a standard configuration. See for yourself: http://pckeyboard.com

And yes, I'm proselytizing :)

Just got a Leopold FC660m with browns. Love the browns. Had reds, hated them. I might add those rubber spacers to reduce travel a bit.

You should try the o-rings for a while. I have the same FC660M with browns, and a Poker with reds. I just can't use the reds any more. The FC feels way too cool.

Yes, the o-rings, that's what I meant by "rubber spacers" :)

I'm getting a Leopold TKL with mx blue soon too (the white otaku one from classifieds).
Tactile keys restored my faith in mechanical keyboards, I couldn't believe it was such a huge difference.

By the way, I still have a Cherry G84 PTMUS (I think) to give for free. It's completely new, bought for 28$ from amazon. Preferably in Seattle area.

Already did. No one seems to want it :( I'll give it another try.

At the end someone always may take it. Keep trying.  8)
