What happens if a geekhack member does not deliver?
« on: Sun, 16 March 2014, 19:24:48 »
What happens if I buy a keyboard on Classifieds and the seller does not deliver the product?

Would you just declare it through pay pal and say that the item has not been received? as it's sent through a gift for the payments for the most part isn't it? so would paypal even refund that or?

Would like to know as I'm thinking about buying a keyboard or two off a few members here on GH.

Thanks.

Buyer be ware and don't pay as a gift. If you do, it's basically considered a donation.

don't use paypal gift for members you don't trust.  That's what I've always been told; personally have not been screwed through classifieds yet though.

No one SHOULD be offended and if they were, I would backoff the deal (buyer is the one paying for the insurance after all)

I'm assuming it's more of a long winded process though because you're sending the payment as a gift? but yeah I'd just like to know, I mean I've not had any issues in the past and I've bought 2 items off GH members before, but I'm looking to pay for more expensive items at the moment and just want to be a bit more careful encase something does go wrong a long the way.

How should you make the payment if not through a gift/donation?

Pay as goods. YOU pay the extra 3% or 4% fee. Don't expect the seller to. When you pay as goods you have buyer protection. If you don't receive your item just file a complaint.

Have the seller create an invoice. They may not want to, but if there is a problem you will have more evidence supporting your claim.

Pay as goods, add fee and you'll get covered from paypal. Paying as gift does not guarantee you a refund!

When you send a payment you can send it as a gift or as payment for goods or services. If you're making a large purchase, always do the latter and include 3% extra to cover the seller's fees. This is basically you purchasing insurance for your payment, as PayPal will help you dispute purchases payed through this method.

I think they changed that. Last time I tried to send gift there was a fee.

Too many people took advantage of it and paypal was starting to lose money. They threatened to close my account once.

Right, you both are correct according to Paypal policy

"It's free* when you use your PayPal balance or your bank account linked to your PayPal account. There is a charge of

Even Paypal received the money from credit / debit card payment, they refused the responsibility if we choose to use payment as gifts

Yes, some of the Paypal rules are a little involved and are very different, and some also have changed a few times. Read through the policies first and then form a decision on what may best suit your needs. Then you can try to see if there are more suitable options.

Paypal has locked up my account at least a couple of times over the years, and it is a PITA.

For example, they will not release the money for 21 days, even on an ebay sale after the item has been delivered and positive feedback received.

I recommend not using "gift" for anything that is not really a gift. You pay a few points but it keeps everything on the up-and-up.

If you are selling "goods" or "services" then tell it like it is and pay the tribute. Paypal fees are not nearly as egregious as ebay fees, but that is another conversation .....

Citizens United violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president.
So now we’ve just seen a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect and sometimes get favors for themselves after the election’s over.”

I paid something earlier today - as a gift there was a fee, as goods/services there was no fee.

Right when you pay as goods/services, the other person has the fees taken out of what you paid, so if someone sold you something for $30, you pay $30, paypal takes out there fees (https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/paypal-fees) and the seller ends up with what is left. And paypal fees are different if you are selling in the US versus international as well.

There is a fee either way with goods/services or gift it is just a matter of who pays the fees seller or buyer and the fees are also dependent on payment method.

What happens if I buy a keyboard on Classifieds and the seller does not deliver the product?
First of all, you should contact the seller and ask what is up. Be polite.
Only if there is a conflict or the seller does not answer in due time should you file a complaint.

Several times I have had sellers delaying the shipment of an item for various reasons: everything from laziness to being thrown out by his girlfriend to moving house and not remembering which crate my item was packed in.
Sometimes a package can take a long time in shipping, depending on where you are in the world and if it is over a holiday.

You should have agreed on a shipping method with the seller before you paid.
If you got insured shipping, you should get a tracking number so you'll know where your package is. However, if the item gets lost or damaged in insured transit, the seller is the only person who can and should file the claim with the shipping company.
If you did not request insurance then the risk is on you: and if the package then gets lost, then all you can do is suck it up.
