Autolock USB thingee
« on: Sat, 15 February 2014, 19:29:20 »
We have Wii, Kinect, PSMove and such.

Wouldn't it be cool to have some device that would detect the user being AFK and automatically lock (WinKey + L) the computer?

I'm always concerned by my privacy, so I developed muscle memory [Stand up while pressing WK+L]

Pretty sure theres a setting in power settings that can auto lock the computer after some pre set time.

My friend wrote a program that worked through Bluetooth that did this. The computer in his room would pick up the Bluetooth in his phone when he was in the room and unlock his computer. Then when he walked away it'd automatically lock. Don't ask me how he did it, but I know it can be done.

I think it worked via magic spells.

I was just thinking about one motion sensor connected to a keyboard PCB thingee that would WK+L when no motion is detected.
Don't know how well would that work, tho. May need some major fixes.

Really cool stuff.
However I don't have a bluetooth capable PC. :(
And some thefts took my phone 2 weeks ago .

Gonna try it whenever I can.

Go more extreme... I read about some high security kind of places that implant chips in the person and all equipment uses it as partial authentication to logon, locks workstation when the person move outside the range. This way, it can't be lost easily and it can't be stolen unless the thief want to be walking around with person arm... probably fairly suspicious.

The implanting chips thing was RFID. I use RFID for all my computers as well, however I don't bother with implants. It's not as secured as it may seem, it is easy to steal an RFID code. I use two different RFID tags to log onto my computers, one of which is always on me and not hidden and another that is always on me and hidden.

Windows L is an easy habit to develop At my work (Government) an unlocked workstation is a breach of code of conduct, so you quickly learn and it becomes instinctual.

You are so concerned about privacy, that you want some device, which is connected to the internet, watching you at all times when at the computer? :))

You didn't get the idea. At all. Altough the bluetooth solution is better my idea would work totally offline, by a simple heat sensor like the ones used on house alarms.
