Lightness - topre 30g/45g vs mx red
« on: Fri, 21 March 2014, 02:02:28 »
Hi everyone; so I was thinking about getting a topre board. however I'm  into light switches, like mx reds. Wouldn't the 45g topre switches be harder to press than the 45g mx reds due to the tactility of the topre switch? So therefore wouldn't it be better to go with the 30g topre switch? It seems really light though but sounds awesome to ahaaha. How would a topre 30g switch compare to mx red when it comes to lightness? Thank you guys for your input.

My favorite MX switch is MX red, too and I have a Realforce 88u 45g... I, for one, don't think the Topre 45g is noticeably heavier than MX reds, at all. They are pretty similar in force actually. I bottom out pretty hard on both, so that might be part of the reason why, but when I gently tap on my Realforce, I think they feel pretty damn light. 30g would be way, way, waaay too light for me.

45gF Topre is lighter.  It maxes at around 45gF while MX red maxes at around 60 gF (before bottoming out).  But really, worrying about the force of these switches is like asking an employee at Staples if heavyweight copier paper may be too heavy to carry around.

bottom line, all of them have flaws and pros... but really you can't say 45g is too stiff.

IMO, 45g Topre will feel like they take a slightly more force than MX Reds..mainly cause Reds start off needing about 30g and then ramp up from there...When I say that I'm talking 45g Realforce.  45g on HHKB, for whatever reason, is probably more similar to MX Browns which take more force than Reds (because of the bump)

30g Topre will be incredibly light. A lot lighter than MX Reds...with my variable RF there are still times I shell out aaaaaaaa from leaving my hands on the keys...

45g Topre definitely feels heavier to me. But it actually varies quite a bit depending on the board. I have 3 different 45g boards, and they all feel different to me. From lightest to heaviest they are Realforce, F660C, Type Heaven.

I have to agree with you.  MX reds have a lighter start-off, which is why many people have problems accidentally pressing keys when resting their fingers on the keyboard.  I tried my first Topre board (45g Realforce) just two days ago, and I noticed that I'm able to tolerate 45g much more on the Realforce than on an MX red board.  The 45g on the Realforce seems to be 45g at the top and drops down upon actuation.  I actually have MX reds with heavier springs (55g), but lubed and stickered.  This configuration's force feels quite similar to a 45g Realforce, if not a FC660C.

I am typing on reds presently and I don't even bottom these bad boys out, so I'm experiencing only the lighter end of the force spectrum and love it. I prefer tactility for typing tough, but I'm in between games at the moment :D Not that these comments are really that useful. If at all possible, try before you buy or else accept that your choice may not be exactly what you're hoping for.
