Anyone Own an FC660MC/EB MX Blue Keyboard?
« on: Sun, 30 March 2014, 21:25:16 »
I'm looking into another MX Blue keyboard--I'm using a CMQFR. I'm considering an M2, FC700R, and, as of this
evening, an FC660M. I cannot find users' reviews where the FC660M (with various MX switches) is not compared
with the FC660C. If you have a 660M with MX Blue switches, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thank you.

I've typed on an FC660M with greens, and it was quite nice. Great layout, very well constructed board, pretty nice PBT keycaps. I got it and subsequently sold it at an absolutely killer price of $70, but it's most certainly worth it's sticker price. All of the Good Feelings that apply to the Poker II apply well to the FC660M as well, in my opinion.

Interesting take on the FC660. I am interested in one. They sound more solid than, say, a CMQFR or Filco M2. Thanks for the feedback.

Compared to most MX boards, the FC660M's build is very high quality. One thing you'll instantly notice from holding one is that it's quite heavy for it's size, and that the build is very durable. I know people always profess that their mech is "build like a tank", but this was the first mech I ever held where I actually felt that way. The stock caps are nice, and don't get annoying over time like most ABS stock caps do, although you may find yourself replacing them anyways since the printing isn't top quality. Regardless, it's my favorite MX board and I'd highly recommend getting one. The right shift is the biggest downside if you're thinking of replacing keycaps, though.

If this is a good quality keyboard at what I consider a reasonable price, I can live with ABS. Thank you.

Oops, I didn't make it clear, but the caps are in fact PBT. Not top-quality PBT, but still PBT.

Is there any pinging from bottoming out key strikes in the FC660M that might require
dampening? I've had to dampen my CMQFRs and Filco M2s, regardless of the MX switch.

I had read where they were PBT; but thought Leopold may have changed the stock caps after reading your post. Thanks for the clarification.

I have one with greens (heavier than blue but otherwise the same) and I really like it. I haven't used it as a daily driver but I use it when setting up new Linux hardware and it works pretty darn well for that. Having the dedicated arrow keys is nice although I have no real problem with function layer arrows either. It does ping a bit but I think that can be solved with some drawer liner to soak up the sound.

I have used a 660m with blues and and have a 660c with topre. Both keyboards have about even build quality, but I don't like the cherry stabilizers on the larger keys. They're pretty clunky imo, I much prefer the costar stabs on my Filco.

If the board requires sound dampeners will depend on your personal preferences. I have an FC660M with browns, and I tested red o-rings of the softed ones, I think they are 40, and I do not like them. The main reason was that the board switches are plate mounted, and the rigidity of the plate makes the switches to feel very solid, and when bottom them the sound is in the lower pitch, wich is very nice. If you get one, you should try some o-rings just to see if you prefer yours with, or without them.

There are some videos of the keyboard in the internet you should check to get a more closer feel of how the board sounds. This video is of a 660M with blues.

As others have already said, the construction is really solid, heavy for its size and the finishing of the plastic has a mate nice feeling, almost as if it were rubbered.

Note: If you are interested in replace the caps you should know that the windows key and the right shift are not standard. The first is 1u instead of the more common 1.25u ANSI, and the right shift is 2.25u, the same size of a left standard key in an ANSI keyboard. But the main issue for replacing the caps is the spacebar. It is 6.25u, which is standard, but the main difference is that its stems are not located in an standard position. Thus, if you want to replace the caps you should get the board in a color close to the set you are interested in to keep using the same space bar.

The FC660M is available in black, white (near cream), and in charcoal gray. This last one comes with dark gray caps, a little bit ligther than the keyboard housing. I got this last color, and I also buy a white, and a black space bars. The white one was sourced with QTan, and for the black I bought a black set for KC84 at Taobao for 14 USD that comes with an space bar that has the same stems positions than the FC660M.

Using a FC660M with clears here. Nothing much to add in the way of praise that hasn't already been stated, just adding credence to the fact that it's incredibly well built.

If I get one I'm leaning towards the white.  I'm glad to know it's more
cream then pure white.
