What mousepad should a non gamer like me get?
« on: Sun, 27 April 2014, 14:09:03 »
[oops.. I posted this in the wrong category]

Hello,
I'm not much of a gamer (at least when it comes to computer gaming).  I just want my mouse to move really smoothly.. What mouse pad should I get? Are those fancy mousepads just for gaming, or do they help in other areas too?
Like I have seen those really wide mousepads that the keyboards go under.  That looks niice.. but I'm not sure if I should dish out 30 bucks just for looking nice when it comes to mousepads...

I currently have a mousepad I design myself a couple years ago on vistaprint, and I just got a new mouse today.  While the mouse is working wonders, I get the feeling that my mousepad could be holding my mouse back.. Or it could just be my imagination..
Does anyone have any accessories or key caps or other poker 2 related things lying around that they are not using?  I don't mind taking it off your hands if you no longer want it...

I don't play computer games either, but I have two of these, one at home and one at work, and I really like them:

I stay busy with work and family these days, but I'm still around, lurking.

Thank you

Is this the same one in terms of quality?

I would assume so. It looks like it's just a different color. I like that blue. Mine are both black, but I'm also a cheapskate.

I love my Artisan Shiden-Kai mid for everything... very smooth and good tracking for use with adobe CS (I don't have a wacom or similar so use mouse) etc as well as for gaming.

I found that cheaper on steel series's website..

that looks nice...  but pretty expensive at least on amazon.  Where did you get yours?  What is special about it to make it so expensive?

I got mine at amazon some years ago. Yes it is glass coated cloth pad so it has a very good inbetween of normal cloth and hard pads... like all the best of both without the cons for going with one or the other in my view. Looks like they currently run between $20-40 depending on what size and colors. I have the medium size one, and I can place my 60% on the short side and it still doesn't cover it completely. The large size is really large. Small size is still bigger than average mouse pad.
Yes they are a bit pricier than some, but they last well. I have had mine for over 3 years and it's still like new and I use heavily.

I used no mousepads or just pieces of foam and sheets of office paper for years, when I did play games. I didn't know what I missed. Recently, after I almost stopped gaming at all, I've found out about those "gaming" mousepads... and they're totally worth it, if you *have to* use a mouse (they're like the second worst pointing device for me).

The problem is that you've got to find a type of surface that fits your sensitivity, mouse's sensor and your preference for control/speed and feels comfortable... and then you'll have to spend hours browsing OCN/ESR to pick the right product (quality can be all over the place).

I started with a plain SteelSeries QcK and it still works after ~3 years, I put it under my trackball and keyboard (the QcK+) for comfort and silencing. However, it's about the worst possible choice for my mousing style (mid-sensitivity fingertip grip w/ a lot of gliding), because it's very slow. Then I switched to Roccat Sota, the plastic on top was a great improvement in terms of speed, while maintaining some comfort, but its layers didn't stick together and about a half of the mat became unusable. Eventually, I've ended up with a SS 4HD mentioned above, although it's loud, less comfortable (colder and harder than cloth) and requires more maintainance.

If you go for a QcK and it doesn't work well with your mouse, try a Puretrak Talent:

Cheap, same size, and has always worked really well when I'm using a mouse that doesn't cooperate with a QcK.
