filmsy construction. flex. crappy cheap feel.

on the other hand, easy to swap switches

either doubleshot or POM keycaps

pretty decent keyboard if you ask me

Wait - Is it?

they are pretty light boards because of not having a plate, so they can feel flimsy at times

what model did you order? I'm guessing LxxGB something similar

That's about as flimsy as it gets. Old G80s are flimsy too, since they have no metal plate. Newer G80s have really thin, light cases, so they're even flimsier than old G80s.

However, flimsy=/=bad. Old G80s are my favourite kind of keyboard. I much prefer them to Filcos, etc. PCB mount switches feel really nice in my opinion. I've never tried a new G80 though.

Easy mod to make it feel more solid... grab a G81-3000. Get used one, cheap as possible... or if there is one with H**** you can pay a bit more on that to get doubleshot key. Then, you will pop off all the MY switch off the plate. Get rubber thin mat, cut out to match plate or you can just wrap the plate in electric tape. This will prevent any shorting. Open the G80 and place the insulated plate underneath the PCB and close it back up. Enjoy nice solid feelings.

Does this only work on certain gens, or does it require cutting up the case? I've tried it before and I definitely can't fit a G81 plate + the G80 PCB in any of my G80s.

I never paid any attention to revision numbers, but I think they were all older ones that had the controller on same PCB as switch not the little daughterboard where the lock lights go. I have done it couple times and it fits... it's hard to close the case but you can do it.

Otherwise you can also put more of the little rubber stick on grips in the mid section around the model label so there isn't such a big span in the center. That helps reduce the flex when typing some as well and is far less work.

Hm, I'll have to give it another go then. I'm using a plate and case from a G81-3007 with a PCB from a 3000SFD.

I also tried this mod with different cases, but always failed. It was impossible to close the case after the g81 plate was in it.

I remember jonathanyu has been trying to sell his filco spacers for months. He's got like 1000. I'm wondering if these things would make a perfect mod. If you cut and paste 10 of them on your PCB, there'll be plenty of support and all impact will be transmitted straight to the bottom of the keyboard, which is lying on your table, so there's no more flex issue unless you are using an ultra flimsy table.

Hmn well I don't know... maybe they changed the thickness of G81 metal too... it wouldn't at all surprise me if newer ones used thinner plates.

Everybody talking about case flex as if this board was made to be used as a liquid soaking sponge and you had to wring it...

Either way, G80-3000 is a good board, regardless of what these elitists tell you.

I'm not the type to bang on my keyboard.

I don't game.

I'm not a kid.

I'm not rough and I'm a touch typist.

And still G80s feel flimsy to me.

but that said, I mostly use the bigger 8200 and 8113, and they really feel weak. Especially if you have a frame of reference that includes Model Ms and Fs. If your frame of reference is Razer then G80-3000 is no problem.

Well my main boards are 2 HHKBs. Ive also had IBM M and many other boards and I have NEVER had to bend my boards in such a way to feel the board flex during normal operation. Sure, when you TRY to bend it it flexes like its made of cardboard and you feel disappointed by it, but do you really notice it while using it as its intended? No, you really dont. Also, given the cost of it (55€ brand new and thats with POM caps AFAIK on black ones) its the best mechanical board money can buy.

OP, I think you will like it. Sure, if you push down really hard or hold it on either side and twist it it's gonna flex. Is that really something you ever do during normal usage though? As others have said, this model doesn't have the nicest case out there, but the feel of the keys is very nice. For me it's a combination of the POM key caps and MX blue switches.

I JUST BOUGHT A CHERRY G80 3000!!!!
That's good.  You have taken your first step into a larger world.
-- Old Ben

they are pretty light boards because of not having a plate, so they can feel flimsy at times
Great for typing. Not so great for smacking someone over the head with ... but I figure that there will be more of the former.
I also think I prefer PCB-mounted over plate-mounted. If the rubber feet haven't come off, the keyboard should sit as sturdily on the table as any heavier keyboard.

Cherry G80-3000LSCGB-2
L:Lasered keycaps. S:Cherry MX Blue. C:USB but will talk PS/2 with cheap passive adapter (usually included).
GB:British layout. -2:White on black POM keycaps.
Many like POM, but I am not a fan myself.

for people to say they are not great for typing would be very wrong as you said :)

just..light and flimsy while moving the boards around :))
