didt they say a long time ago that they would produce ergo clears if there was enough interest?

Yes but the numbers were outrageous IIRC.

@demik: Topre is the iOS of keyboard switches. Expensive, proprietary, locked in, unmodifiable, almost 0 keycap options. Cherry is the Android. Inexpensive, open, easily modified and customised to your own tastes and preferences, huge range of keycap options.

You want something between a 45g and 55g? Too bad bro.

You want to try different keycap profile? Too bad bro.

You like that new thick doubleshot GMK keycap set from BunnyLake? Too bad bro.

You want a PBT spacebar that matches your set? Too bad bro.

Unless you ALSO buy a Novatouch and swap sliders.

You want to type without bottoming out? Too bad bro.

You like one of the two Topre switch options? Good for you... if the board layout you want comes in that option.

If not? Too bad bro, unless you spend twice as much so you can do a dome swap.

These are just some reasons that make Browns better than Topre (simply because they're an MX switch). Even though they're still a compromise between Reds and Clears. They're just 2 steps away from perfection. Stem and spring swap and you've got 62g ErgoClears or 62g/65g Blacks.

P.S. - I'm just pissed 'cos I'm still waiting for my milky BroBot that I'm sure I won. I get that, I'll throw away all my MX stuff, buy a HHKB and stop making long and useful posts and instead simply say "Get a HHKB" in every thread.

none of that matters to me tbh. dont really care to own a million diff keysets that i wont use. the classic sets are enough (again, to me). it provides the switch weight i like.

not my fault topre is perfect. blame the japanese.
No, he’s not around. How that sound to ya? Jot it down.

Hard to believe they would stop browns , it's the most popular switches on stock keyboards .

What would be great is they replace browns with ergo-clears .

the only issue I would see is that ergo-clears vary so widely there isn't a set in stone definition of them, some people prefer lube some don't and the range of switches used varies greatly.

They could simply pull a spring from blue/red/browns , recolor the clear stem and create a simple ergo-clear.

We (picky geekhackers ) will still find a way to mod it or look for vintage north korean springs, but at least people that don't mod would have something way better .

Loving the browns hate. Too bad it will be a long, long time before I can lay my fingers upon a Topre switch.

I love my Cherry MX Browns and hope the switch isn't going away.  My main board is a Max Keyboard Blackbird with browns.  It replaced a CM Storm QFS (also with MX browns), because I missed having a back-lit keyboard, and I loved that the keycaps were double-shot.  Before that I had a CM Storm QFR with MX Blues.  I liked MX Blues, especially the sound, I just didn't like gaming with them.

I have multiple RSIs, so a low actuation force is better for me (haven't had a chance to try Cherry MX reds, yet.  I tried one of those tester kits, but it was useless).  I like being able to have keycap options, so I haven't bothered to check out Topre, and I've tried but didn't enjoy Alps (hubby's pricey Datamancer "Executive" keyboard - which he set aside for my old CM QFR with MX Blue!).

Ultimately, though, I'm waiting on AcidFire's keyboard project.

If I may vouch for the reds, the more I type on them, the more I love them. Been a week now since I have my new keyboard and I'm getting the feeling the switches are slowly broking in. It's so smooth and easy on fingers/hands/wrists it's really a pleasure to type on them. Weirdly, some people say they are boring compared to browns. For sure, with browns you get that light tactile feedback but it's not true you have no feeling with reds. I'm feeling the spring way more with linear switches than with tactile where the bump takes all the place. I'm not really a touch typist yet (will try to work on it in the next months) but sometimes I get that focus/speed burst where I can chain a streak of words at my fastest speed and you literally get the feeling your fingers are flying/dancing on keys. It's pretty hard to describe :) You have to try this really.

I've been curious about trying a 60% keyboard...maybe I'll pick one up with reds.

Looking how the mainstream keyboards are selling with cherry switches right now, I think your hopes won't be fulfilled for a little while...

I'm just being an ass. Of course it won't happen. As through most of Cherry's history, keyboards is a pretty small portion of their business. Mechanical keyboards could stop selling entirely on a dime and Cherry would be fine.

I hope Cherry goes out of business entirely.

Unfortunately, Cherry clones would probably become standard after then as opposed to Matias Alps or some other switch.

You sure about that, bro? Don't you even want to try a 55g HHKB? Or POM keycaps? Well you can't, but don't you want to? Come on, you know you do.

I hope Cherry goes out of business entirely.

If they keep doing business they way they are now, they just may... They really need to put some more effort into smoothing the stems / quality control and actually creating some kind of innovation of their products, but at the moment they're all talk and no action, whereas the clone makers are stepping up their game. To be honest, I think they'll survive, there'll always be Cherry MX switches, but the clone makers will be gaining more and more market share regardless. If I were a clone maker (or Cherry themselves), I'd reduce the range to 3 switches, 62g Linear, Tactile (Clear stems) and Clicky. No Brown sliders, no "quiet" click sliders and no "light" and "heavy" springs, just 62g.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

Just take a weekend trip to my place and try some topres =)
