How to set avatar with no background?
« on: Fri, 27 June 2014, 18:22:02 »
In CS6 there is no background. I save as a PNG, and then upload to GH for an avatar. Now it has a black background...

Try saving it as a gif instead then.

Tried but to no avail.
I don't know how rowdy does it. :p
In windows photo viewer there is no background. And then I upload here and I have these stupid black corners lol.

If you open the PNG locally (not in Photoshop), does it have a background?

edit: reading comprehension fail :D

Then go the easy (but gross) way, just make the background the same as the most common theme.

Getting an animated gif to work correctly is tricky as you have to make sure it isn't resized by the forum software and is under a magical (hidden) file size limit.  Might be the same with transparency.

Maybe try a small version (less than 100 x 100) ?

edit: Maybe try downloading rowdy's avatar, editing it (as a PNG, without upconverting to whatever CS6's native format is), clear out his skull and paste yours in.

Not animated. Just a static image saved as a .gif has allowed me to post images with transparent backgrounds on GH before, but I've never had any luck with .PNG format on here.

Aaand now I made this much larger one, which had its transparency turned black.

The one that worked was 100 x 100, the one that failed was 1000 x 1000.  Seems likely that the issue is the forum software resizing after you upload.

edit: put my original avatar back :)

I use GIMP (not having anything better).

I set a random colour as a background, specifically a colour that does not appear anywhere in my picture (for the Drunken Skull I chose black).

Then I select a region by colour (black in this case).

Next I use Colour-to-alpha, select black as the source, and GIMP makes the selected black region transparent.

Save as PNG.

The most difficult part is taking a photo with all its background noise, and tracing around the edge of the actual keycap with black.  Takes ages.  The rest is relatively easy.

I seem to remember doing it in PaintShopPro a few years ago was much simpler, but I no longer have access to that app.

God that's overcomplicated. Why not just magnetic lasso the edge of the image, then cut the image and paste it onto a transparent bg?

Well the way I did it, was unlock the layer in photoshop, select the background and press delete. Then forgot to resize it.

Me?

I've tried all sorts of selection, but there is so much background noise in the photos that it is extremely difficult to get it to select just what I want.

Lighting makes a difference.

For the transparent keycaps, background makes a difference too.

I tried photographing the Drunken Skull against a white background (sheet of paper), and the skull part almost disappeared.

The image I ended up with was taken against a black background.

Experiment - with today's cameras you can take dozens of photos, and only keep the one that you like best.

I tried on wood, didn't turn out too well, the sides of the cap were beige.

Tried against a black background, kinda okay, phone had trouble focusing.

Then found a book, Percy Jackson the Titans Curse, and the back of it is a shade of blue. Phone was focusing pretty well.

Stock Google Camera app doesn't really like focusing lol.

Looking at two of the pictures I took of the Drunken Skull outside in natural light (but not bright sunlight) on the same day, the one on the black background looks better and actually looks more focussed too, using my little old point and shoot camera.

I suspect this one worked better because I chose a dark colour that contrasted with the lighter colour of the top of the Drunken Skull.

The opposite os blue is red - you could try photographing it against a red background, but I have a feeling that it will turn out looking purple

Add alpha channel.
Wand out the background. Hit delete.
BG turns to grey and white checker pattern which means transparent.
Save as png.
??????
Profit.
