It's a shame so many are missing their cables; only if apple engineers back then figured to put some sort of clips on the cable to prevent then from being separated so easily.

Fortunately, you can use S-Video cables in place of ADB. They're the exact same connector physically.

As for why they were easily disconnected, it was a design choice. Apple liked to keep cable clutter to a minimum, so the mouse had a short cable that connected to the keyboard. That way, only one cable went to the computer. By making the cable detachable, the mouse could be put on the left side for left handed people, and the other side would connect to the machine.

Yup, the SVid connector is actually capable of more bandwidth or whatever, but they work fine. I have a couple regular ADB cables but I just don't even use them.

You can also now look at auctions for ADB cables and laugh at the insane prices they're asking for things that nobody needs.

Original Apple cables are an ugly gray color and coiled, which I dislike greatly. It is pretty hard to find S-video cables in beige, they are almost all black.

I have had at least 10 3501s, most were dampened creams, but a couple were dampened whites. I may not have checked the first few, but I am pretty sure that all the serial numbers started with AP and ended with M3012. And all the white ones were the 1995 copyright.

I have tried to initiate a number of discussions on the orange/salmon question, but have never gotten a definitive answer. It appears that for M0115 the early serial numbers (<500K) are more likely to be orange and the later ones (>500K) are more likely to be salmon.

It also seems to be the consensus that there is no appreciable difference between orange and salmon.

The 2 dampened whites I had both were 1995 copyright and redesigned labels.

That sounds like the opposite of my experience. The only AEK2 I currently own is in deep storage.

The photos were from last spring when I sold off 3 AEK2s that I had laying around. The dampened whites were the 1995 copyrights with boxed S mark on both labels. Those were the only 2 dampened whites I have ever owned.

If  MY  memory serves me, and it may not, all of the half-dozen or so of the other AEK2s that I have had were dampened creams and had 1990 copyright labels similar to the one I showed above. I never paid attention to the squiggle or the boxed S, but was always surprised to find the serial number ending in M3012, because I thought that was the old model number AEK2 that might have been salmon.

i went off what i researched and it led me to an inexpensive 3501 with salmon alps with what i described, but i am sure your research supports what you have described as well

I compared new finds to what I had and upgraded until I ended up with a really nice one. I did not study the minutiae very closely, but I do know that I never got a salmon one, and that those 2 whites were late in the game (both date-wise and my acquisition of them).

The M0115 is much more appealing to me, and I went through several before I got a good one. I upgraded similarly so that I now I have a really nice AEK (orange) and AEK2 (cream) boxed up and stored away with ADB cable and iMate, for the day I get interested again.

Until a year or so ago, I did not pay attention to serial numbers of orange vs salmon, but I think that all of them that I remember had serial numbers between 200K and 900K. It is my understanding that orange is early and salmon is later, with no substantive difference between them.

i don't think i have ever seen a m0115 with salmons, just the 3501's

Like I've said before, orange has the long backplate just like blues, and salmon does not, just like black.

I pulled a cap on one of my AEK II's, and I'm wondering what the switch is. On first glance it looks like white Alps but on closer inspection, the sides don't line up like other whites I've seen:

I quite want to find an Alps-mount Mitsumi board. (If someone is selling one for relatively cheap, I’m interested.) How do you like it? How does it compare to Alps switches, assuming you’ve tried some? I also wonder how these Mitsumi switches compare to the “mini” variant.

To me, they feel extremely close (almost imperceptibly so) to my AEK II with dampened white Alps. Had I not tried the AEK with Orange Alps, I'd probably like it more than I do, but both of my AEK II's have been in storage since buying my first AEK(which feels a tad smoother, lighter, and springier).
