ultranav ps/2 with ibook - anyone?
« on: Tue, 16 June 2009, 20:35:55 »
Ok so I just plugged in my ps/2 ultranav ibm keyboard (via Y adapter ps2-usb) into my ibook, and...

...on the screen appears the 'identify this keyboard' wizard (as is normal on macs). But then everything freezes. Mouse doesnt work (on either built-in keyboard or the ultranav) and keystrokes dont work (either on built-in keyboard or ultranav).

If i unplug the ultranav, everything immediately works as normal.

Any ideas?  I googled this and it seems like there certainly are people out there using ultranavs with macs.  Is it the ps2 again that is the problem?

Well, it's dongle day so have you tried it with another one?  If you can get the keyboard working that's a step forward.

well the dongle works fine on my dell, so i dont think its the dongle per se. I'm thinking its maybe the ps/2...

I asked the ebay seller if I could swap it for a usb one... it'll be about 15 bucks more.  On the other hand, this is an opening to return it if I wanted to. But I actually want to keep it! ;)  So maybe i'll swap it for a usb.  Google is full of mac users happily using their ultranavs on ibooks and macs, so I'm thinking this is a ps/2 issue.

I cant imagine what kind of issue, but thats what it seems like.

Ok, it may well have been the dongle, but there are still issues, so I'm still swapping this board for a USB version.

-I tried the blue cube on the keyboard part of the ultranav, with the mac. Worked perfectly! ("I believe in the blue cube". It has yet to fail me).

-But then I tried it on the mouse part, and it didnt work. (I dont consider this really a failure of the blue cube, because its intended for keyboards and not mice (as clickykeyboard site specifically states, and there's an engraving of a keyboard on the cube itself, to drive that point home).  But this means I dont know how to attach a ps/2 mouse to the mac.

-There ARE some products out there that CLAIM to do this -- attach ps/2 keyb and mouse to a mac via usb. For example:
http://www.usbgear.com/USB_TO_PS2_CONVERTER/

But its $20. Its actually cheaper for me to swap this board for a usb version of itself. (Plus the unknown trial and error factor of which dongle will eventually work)

So I'm just going to swap the ultranav for usb version.  Much simpler as a solution, and cheaper too.
