Greetings, Newfound Home!
« on: Sun, 05 October 2014, 23:34:23 »
Greetings GH! I've registered some time ago, and I decided this will be the day I stop lurking and participate in discussions!  :p

Some bits about my keyboard journey myself, after researching on what I now think of as the surface information (types of common switches available and usages), I decided to go with a MX Brown (Filco MJ2) which is the 'midline between gaming and typing'.

Then after a period of lurking I ordered a Poker II with MX Reds to see what's the hype with 60% boards, and just thought of trying linear switches for a change. In the meantime I got myself a TaiHao Dolch Replica, which changed how my Filco felt due to the increased thickness. By the time my Poker II arrived I was blown away by the thickness of dem PBT. That started a whole new obsession and hype in the keycap department..

Between my Poker II and Filco (MJ2 with Browns) I've grown to love the Reds more so I bought another Filco MJ2 with Reds! :p Now the other Filco is sitting in the closet. I'm planning to revisit it when my Granite keycap arrives from Massdrop - probably mod it in the future! :D

Welcome to GeekHack.

Converted from browns to reds, eh? I'm using the browns myself and they've been great for typing so far. Do you prefer both the typing and gaming experience on reds?

I'm also curious as to why you bought two Filco MJ2's instead of trying a different board o_o

Welcome to Geekhack!

July isn't some time ago - someone made their first post here recently after joining more than a year ago

Where did you get Tai Hao Dolch from?  I'm still waiting for the GB to finish to get mine
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Gaming wise, there wasn't much difference since I'd hit the keys hard. (I play LoL, sometimes)

As for typing: After hours and weeks of typing between Browns and Reds, I actually preferred Reds so much more!
The Reds have a smooth downstroke with a little increased resistance at the bottom - when typing for hours it was a joy, it felt like my fingers were diving into a cushioned plate.
As for the Browns my fingers were hammering the plate hard at the end of each downstroke. It felt as if the downstroke after the bump was effortless, sending the stroke down the plate hard!
Not sure if I'm making sense here!  :-[

As for another Filco - I really want to be sure that, for the same board and construction, regardless of the keycap that I'll prefer Reds over Browns. Who knows I'll change my opinion again?  ;D

I got the Tai Hao Dolch from the garage sales at a local forum. I think it was from a group buy earlier this year, since I got it some 3 months ago. They're starting to shine already!

My god, one year of lurking! Well it's about time we appear in the open  :p

Yeah, ABS does that.  Fortunately I bought enough sets in the first Tai Hao GB that I haven't used any one of them for longer than a couple of months.

Good for you, that way you can always pop them on for a couple of shots and not deal with multiple sets of shiny keycaps.
I'm thinking of upgrading to GMK or thick dyesubs in the near future, thick caps all the way!

I'm being slow-cooked by my obsession! If I'd hacked my wallet, I'll be splurging like crazy already :))

GMK are still ABS plastic though, and will still shine.  Although many prefer their Cherry profile over Tai Hao's OEM profile.

Alternatively look out for some PBT keycaps - they will take years to shine, if at all!

Good plan you got there but just don't wait too long on some purchases.  I've made that mistake only for the items to never come up for sale again. :(

Backup funds will quickly become your living expenses while your actual living expenses will be paying off your stupidly expensive hobby. What you need is another job. What I need is another job... :(

I read posts that shine on GMK is still tolerable and pleasant to some extent. I have yet to try Cherry profile though. But in any case, shine or no shine, I must try it to find out!

Yeah , gotta eyeball the sales / groupbuy threads ! Some impulsive kick will be appreciated..  :D
