Hi GH from the UK!
« on: Sun, 04 January 2015, 18:02:14 »
Greetings geekhack! I'm from London, I came across this forum in my quest for mechanical goodness, it seems the roads lead here and after spending some time reading threads I made an account. Last night I read some Clack Therapy and my bemusement gave way to "wants it" but with the remaining thought "this is ridiculous!".

I don't currently have a mechanical keyboard and haven't had much time with them so my experience level is next to zero. After getting a tester set of Cherry Red, Blue, Brown, Red I'm pretty sure I want to go with Brown for general use.

I use AutoCAD during the week, I play games all the time and due to both I'm not looking to go down the tenkeyless route right now, I think I need that numpad. Also I measure in millimetres & kilograms, I use A4 paper and of course an ISO keyboard layout. That appears to be problematic for PBT keycap sets.

One day I'd like to make my own keyboard but the 104/105 key PCB options are... none?

Anyhow from what I’ve seen the community here seems cool and I’m glad I found it, and that awesome wiki.

Cheers that's fantastic, Googling on my end only seemed to result in tenkeyless PCBs, I guess the more time I spend here the more I'll know. I'm quite a way off making one, firstly I plan to get started with a mechanical keyboard, looking at Filco Majestouch & some Ducky options, but I'm still reading opinions here.

Welcome to Geekhack!

You can always get a TKL or 60% keyboard, and a separate numpad.  Best of both worlds - smaller footprint keyboard for ergonomic goodness, and a separate number pad that you can position as you need.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

^This. The more you get into this hobby, the more your collection will grow. I believe a tenkeypad is a safe investment especially when you use the numpad a lot.

I had not considered the numpad option until you both mentioned it, much to learn. Thanks for the welcome!

Welcome to GH!

since you use AutoCAD you could try and find a local place to get some acrylic cut and make your own sandwich style keyboard in any layout you like. we have a CAD resource page here. https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=47744.0

That is most impressive, I guess with a niche crowd and the way GBs seem to happen there's quite a crossover in communities?

Thanks for that, it's great someone put that together. I think for newcomers it would also be good to have an introduction to making and the techniques used to make custom keyboards and keycaps - for example I've been trying to read about making a keycap on the quality level of the most desired but that's proving a bit difficult. (Saying that I have found some helpful threads)

Welsome!

Thanks for the welcome!

I have a couple of questions:
- When will I not have to enter a captcha to post?
- My post count is still 0?

If I am correct it should start counting post once you post outside of this subforum, as I don't believe it count posts here, but maybe someone else could say otherwise?

GH had a very good wiki.  An excellent one, by all accounts.

Unfortunately it was lost when r00tw0rm happened :(
