Berate them for not using Topre until they kill themselves and stop bothering you with their typing.
Please consider carefully before you decide to comment, for Jesus.

Headphones?

I mean, it doesn't bother me - I'm the guy with a Model M (or rather, was; trying MX Clears now). I used to sit near three other Model M users.

I guess it's like any other office noise (loud conversations, loud servers, radios, etc.). Talk directly to the culprit and maybe mention to your boss if it's an issue. Try to establish a relationship with the individual other than being the keyboard nag and maybe it will get somewhere. Don't act like you know everything, or necessarily more about keyboards than the keyboard owner. Maybe just DGAF.

Or maybe use it as an excuse to buy more keyboards yourself to let the culprit sample. :-P

There's someone nearby at my office (which I'm not at often, fortunately) who's spacebar sounds like a springboard. Every time she hits space, it goes "boing". Enough to drive us all mental. I'm tempted to just replace it when she's not there with a new one that doesn't do it.

As for using mechs, I certainly won't be bringing any clicky switch to the office in a cubicle environment. MX Blue, Alps Blue, and buckling spring are all too inconsiderate in my opinion.

Topre would be on par with the sound level of other keyboards, and MX Brown/Red would probably fall under the radar for the most part but I still think it's kind of loud.

Ultimately, I've been in offices that use all Apple keyboards (laptop scissor style) and it's dead silent. However, you'll just start hearing other noises to drive you mad. Offices are full of disruptive people.
And that is ultimately true. I would actually prefer the background noise of a hundred people typing on mechanical keyboards. I do better with some background noise, as long as it's more or less constant.

There's a guy in my office who spends half the time swearing really loudly for no reason in casual loud conversation with people in other cubicles. Well, when he's not hacking up a bone and coughing to the point of nearly throwing up.

Then there's the group of ladies that whisper really loudly. I don't get it.

The office environment is not for the neurotic, anyways!

You must buy a box of ****ty boards to do that! I won't hit that type of guy with my beloved Topre board.

I'd tell them I find the noise irritating, let them type for a while on my trampoline modded ErgoClears with SA caps, point them to GeekHack.org and ask them to change boards.

Then live vicariously through them as they buy board after board and keycap set after keycap set, since I'm all wallethacked already.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

I'm the guy in the office with the nice keyboard.  It's really hard for me to feel sorry for anyone in the office here who doesn't like it.  Since I seem to be the only one working.

You're cruel. In response to a clicky keyboard you bankrupt your Co-worker. Nice manipulation though.

Every office environment is different. I've had people say my mx browns with o-rings are too loud, so forget even thinking about something like blues.

People in my class circulated a petition against my HHKB then gave it to the teacher.

Unfortunately the MobiK was delayed so it was all I had =S

Nobody says anything about the MobiK now.

As for if I was in the receiving end, I'm not shy or hypocritical. I do keep my own noise level to what I consider acceptable (non clicky at a minimum) and would just ask the same of them. Something like a blue switch is meant to make sound so I'd offer to get them hooked on some ergo clears ;)

Behind my back then gave it to the teacher who proceeded to ban me using it. I also sat in the far back corner to avoid annoying people (plenty of seats upfront =\) and the people sitting around me were too busy watching soccer anyway.

Oh well, that's over.

Someone could have been selected to talk to you about it without having talk to the teachers. Sometimes people can be real ****s though. I'm sure you would have tried to accommodate their request, wouldn't you? Were you using a Type-S?

I had a regular HHKB

The HHKB was never planned to be my main portable.

I knew it wasn't the quietest thing in the world so I sat in the far back corner.

I tried swapping with someone for a type s while waiting for my mobik with no luck.

What is your current keyboard-situation in class?

I started using a Model M (well, okay, a Unicomp) at work this week, and I told my co-workers beforehand that if anyone was bothered I would take it home and use my Das w/browns instead.  I bent over backward to make it clear that I would gladly do that at anyone's request.

So far nobody has complained.  I think it might have been different had I not been "proactive" about making sure nobody was annoyed.  I'm guessing I bought some goodwill that way.

Of course, the guy on the other side of the cube wall from me now jokes about it and says it sounds like I'm a secretary.  :)

If it was a Model M, I would congratulate the co-worker on a fine keyboard, and maybe bring some of mine into the office to display.

If it was an MX blue or MX green keyboard, I would ridicule the co-worker about the blues/greens every time I saw them, until they chose a superior switch type.

I'd ridicule them if it was a Model M too.  If you want superior BS, Model F or die.

Flippers over Hammers.  They actually feel very much alike.  I really don't know where you are coming from Nubbinator.  I would probably like a model F if and only if it had a model M layout.  That is the reason IBM made the change to begin with!  The model F keyboards don't really feel that much different from model M keyboards.  Superior buckling spring?  What are you talking about?
Your opinion is yours.  I just don't really think there is much difference in feel at all.  I find the model F to be awkward to use.

Never even seen an F, let alone used one, so all I have to go on is how the M feels.  I worked with IBM Model Ms when they were current production, and the Unicomp feels the same (trusting my memory on this) and sounds similar.  I also had a Northgate when those were current production, and for the life of me I don't know what happened to it.  I wish I had it today.

One benefit of the loud keyboard in a work environment is that your coworkers always know how fast you type.  ;)

There are different Model Fs with different layouts; some of them better than others. IIRC, IBM made the change to save costs on manufacturing the keyboards, otherwise I think they would have just kept producing the Model F with the Model M's layout.

Of course, the guy on the other side of the cube wall from me now jokes about it and says it sounds like I'm a secretary.  :)

And the trouble is with a noisy keyboard everyone can tell when you are working, and when you are not.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
