Soldering Gun Lock & Loaded!

Greetings All!

I've been using a Logitech G15 for years now and my friend let me borrow his mechanical keyboard and now I'm hooked.
And of course I can't do a buy it off the shelf keyboard, so I'm looking to learn about modding keyboards.

I would like a SSK but seeing how spendy those are I may just have to settle with a standard size.
But for now I'm looking for seeing how I can even mod keyboards, so if anyone knows of a list, that would be greatly helpful!

Right now I'm looking to probably pick up an IBM Model M off of ebay since they're $40-60 and use that as my guinea pig and learn the in's and out's of mechanical keyboards. Then from there I would make "THE keyboard".

Depends on what you want to mod.  Model M are fine keyboards (I have two), but there is only so much you can do with them these days.  Paint the case, replace the keycaps (with the exception of the space bar sometimes), convert from ANSI to ISO or backwards.  And a bolt mod, of course.  Floss mod, perhaps.

You might look through the making stuff together thread for more hardcore modifications to keyboards.

And if you do mod something, make sure you take plenty of pictures and post them :)

Thanks rowdy!

I probably have a little more connections to tooling/manufacturing that most people do since I work for a manufacturing company and my cousin works for a circuit board making company, so I just need to see what can/can't be done and how much things cost. I'm really starting to like the idea of a SSK but they are so dang spendy, so was thinking of if there's a way to convert a full keyboard down to a smaller one, but so far no luck.

IBM keyboards do not have "switches" in the sense that other types such as Cherry and Alps do.

IBM keyboards have "mechanisms" that can't really be altered significantly.

Get your feet wet by swapping switches around in those other types of keyboards first.
