What foam and how to install in keyboard?
« on: Mon, 01 July 2019, 23:42:21 »
I was thinking of adding foam into a keyboard to dampened the sound if possible. But I was not sure what foam I would need and how I would install the foam into the keyboard. Specifically, if I need to cut it or if there are sound dampening foam specially made for keyboards already.

Thanks in advance and any help would be appreciated,

Henry

we probably need more information. What keyboard are you planning to add foam to?

It's the more conventional keyboards. Something like a Cooler Master or Keyed Up Labs. But it is TKL.

I suggest craft foam or shelf liner.  Open it up and put foam wherever it will fit :)

Simple foam like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01I1TED18

I like the 1mm so you can stack it where needed.  There will probably be spaces in the case where you can't fit any at all.

Shelf liner is good too:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EMBII8S

The foam goes between the case bottom and the back of the PCB

Thank you so much for all this information! This really helps me.

So before I purchase, can I actually open the KUL ES-87? So I can add the foam. And do I just need a rectangle shaped piece of foam to put under the PCB?

Thanks again.

Yes, you can open it, but It will probably void the factory warranty.  There is usually a screw covered by a sticker that says it will void the warranty if removed.  Yes, just place foam under the PCB.  You will probably end up cutting lots of strips and squares to fit in spaces

Great! I'll be right to it then. Thanks.

Found this on reddit:

There are 3 screws on the back, one under each foot, and one under the warranty sticker on the back. There are clips on the front and back, just pop those loose, I'd recommend something plastic, I use an old gift card. Then the the top part of the case comes off and you have full access to the inner assembly.

Be careful when popping open the tabs. Might break the plastic top case. Especially if you use something hard like screwdriver

Thank you for your warnings. I will try to be very careful using the screwdriver to install the foam.

For anyone else who is looking to install foam in a Tofu board, I have a little secret  :))
In the packaging, it comes with a foam wrap that if you cut, can be perfect for dampening the sound.
I know OP doesn't have that keyboard, but keep an eye out for any packaging that may contain foam wrap.

Thank you! This information may come in handy in the future and I’m sure others might have Tofu’s.
