my first set of custom keycaps [WASDkeyboards]
« on: Thu, 05 February 2015, 06:09:43 »
Hi all! So just started my keycaps exploration, and really liked what i saw with the Skull Squadron set. Sadly it's so hard to get one, and I'm not really sure I wanted the spherical keycap. My research led me to WASDkeyboards.com, and I quickly drafted something up with their custom keycap creator. So I played around a little, and placed the order! Here's some photos of the switching process on my MJ2 TKL.

So, basically i changed the yellow row to orange, and left the legend simple, with a blank windows key. (I kinda regret not editing them further, but the excitement took over!)
The material used seems to be better than those came with the MJ2, so I'm pretty satisfied now.
I also have a grey, white, and yellow pbt set coming my way from taobao, so I'll decide what to do later on, haha.

Hope you guys liked this set of photos.

i'm also guilty of typing 'keybaords' way too often. very well taken pics! but please up your resolution next time  :)

that said, WASD custom caps are notorious for being low quality thin ABS. i'm sure the PBT set will replace it when it arrives to you

Oops! Edited the title, haha didn't check them. Anyway I've adjusted the resolution too!
Haha well that's why I ordered the PBT set, but we shall see, might wait till there's shine before changing them. MIGHT. Lol

Thanks all! I'm curious to see how I can replace this with the PBT set too, however I've no luck getting any PBT Red Enter key, any ideas on where I might find one?

Haha yea it's heavily inspired by the Skull Squadron set, just replaced the yellow with orange, and they are not spherical, still hoping to get my hands on the Skull Squadron one day.

Nice set - nice clear legends :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

There was this: http://keypuller.com/skull-squadron-dcs/

DCS profile set, but also hard to find right now, best bet is placing a WTB thread in classified or mentioning it in this thread: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=54334.0

Yep I have some some PBT sets coming from Taobao, not too sure of their quality yet, but cheaper than what massdrop can offer.
However I'm not too keen on getting a whole red set just for the "Enter" and "esc", so was trying to find places that sells them individually.

Haha I was a little sceptical at first too, but after using it for a while, it's better than what my Ducky Shine 3 and Filco MJ2 came with, so it'll work for now. And I can't wait for those PBTs to arrive, chinese new year is causing a huge delay at TaoBao!

Didn't have time for a longer post earlier, but I agree with most others here. Great result from the limited options of WASD and it's the best looking WASD set I've seen so far :D

I'm really hoping Matt3o does at some point do a Skull Squadron Group Buy in SA profile, preferably 1,2,3,3,3,4 row profile. It's a great colourway.

Thanks! Haha, I think the next time I'll consider the Skull Squadron set is when it's in PBT! Now I'm all over Granite, and well, they are hard to come by too, I guess I started this hobby just a few months late!

Nah, it's never too late. I thought the same when I started out, just missed out on some great Group Buys, but I got the sets I wanted from the classifieds and there are some new great Group Buys started all the time. I've fallen in love with SA profile and right now there's the Hack'd by Geeks set and 1976 Group Buys, the relegendables mini GB and the Danger Zone Interest Check :)

very beautiful, how do you go that deep into integration, do you upload each key from the $10 single keycap option?

I see now that they have a custom illustration input/option, very tempting, I was thinking of buying a blank board, I'm now tempted to create a custom colorscheme/font with that too

WASD keys are extremely thin, that they are almost untolerable. Legends have improved though.
