any bets on the switches in upcoming TP3?
« on: Mon, 31 August 2009, 14:57:38 »
So matias says its Tactile Pro 3 is coming out this Fall.

http://www.matias.ca/tactilepro2/

Any bets on which kind of alps it will have? I figure we can get a headstart on that round of fights :-D

I wonder who will be the guniea pig to acquire one first. And how long they will sit on it before finally opening up a switch :)

Seeing that you are asking about switches do you have any idea what are in these filco boards:

First one PS/2 dirty board but cheap:

Second board a mac filco but looks to be USB, again cheap:

And on the more expensive front we have this SIIG filco look alike:

Oh sorry to hijack this thread but seemed like a good place to ask. I'm really considering getting that first one but I'm not sure what kind of switches are in it. I have also seen another mini filco with black cherry switches in it but missed that one and it was more than I wanted to pay for it.
Keyboards
Topre Capacitive: Realforce 87U, Realforce 86U, HHKB Pro 2, Topre MD01B0, Topre HE0100, Sun Short Type, OEM NEO CS (x2), NISSHO Electronics KB106DE
Buckling Spring: IBM Model M Space Saver (1291472), Unicomp Customizer x 2
Cherry Brown: Filco FKBN87M/EB, Compaq MX11800
Black Alps: ABS M1
Not so great boards Rare Spring over dome OKI, Sun rack keyboard

Trackballs - Trackman Wheel (3), Trackman marble (2)
Keyboards I still want to get - Happy Hacking Keyboard Pro 2 the White version, Realforce 23U number pad in black and maybe white, μTRON ergo board with Topre switches.
Previously owned - SiiG MiniTouch (White Alps), Scorpius M10 (Blue Cherry), IBM Model M13

dude those are neat looking boards. Can you ask the seller to open up a switch? If they're real geeks they usually dont have a problem with that.

If I am not mistaken, the first two have some Alps variant.  I am not sure about the mini, though.

They are all on Yahoo Japan so not exactly sure how to ask them to pull a key and take a picture. The first two are 1000 yen (about 10 bucks) have no bids and are getting close to expire and was thinking what the heck. I already have some boards waiting for shipping so I could just throw them in the box with out increasing my shipping cost to much I think.

That little one already sold so really can't get it. But I had not seen a filco in that form factor before and was wondering what it was.

EDIT: Lets be honest here I was really thinking I could get them for cheap and clean them up then sell them here for a small profit:evil: if I did not like them.

Auugh! I thought they had changed the TP3 release date to Autumn 2010. They were promising it for Spring 2010 earlier this year, which was moved back from Spring 2009.

Anyway, when I thought they were delaying the release until Autumn 2010, I decided I couldn't wait that long and bought a Filco Majestouch this morning. I'm really fond of Matias' optimizer features though I realize I can just program some macros and remap some keys to achieve the same effect.

I'm sure I'll survive if I end up with two sweet keyboards. It'll be hard, I know.

BTW, let's hope that you don't end up having to sacrifice two USB ports to the TP3 like was done on the TP2.

The TP2 required two USB ports.

Wasn't one of the connections used for a USB hub?  DSI does something like this for their modular keyboard.

i'm sure you wont have any trouble selling one of them here. I'd buy the tp2/3 in a second :)
I prefer a full size board... so my choice is to buy filco zero for 90 plus 30 for a decent usb numpad, or 150 for the tp3 if it comes out soon (and if we can verify it has fukkas). Thats a lot of "ifs". :)

yes, that's correct. the TP2 does not require two USB ports. only one is needed to use the keyboard. the other is needed only for the USB hub, which can be left unplugged.

Okay, gotcha.   So the USB hub is just sharing the case with the keyboard, and the keyboard is not connected through it.

My bad. I had read a review a ways back that said it needed to eat up two USB ports. I guess they don't want the USB 2.0 dock to potentially interfere with your sweet joyous typing experience.

I think some KVM switches are allergic to keyboards connected through hubs; perhaps they're trying to avoid that problem?

Either that, or they didn't want to provide a hub where the keyboard is already sucking power off it.
