Hello All,
I've been doing some thinking about the future of computers. I often lurk around tech sites and there's one thing I hear referenced more than just about anything else by a large margin, and that's this:
"... for most people's computing needs..."[/i]
... or some variant of that. Basically, when talking about computers/tablets/phones over the last few years, it seems that the consensus is that the average user's needs aren't really any different than they were years ago. In other words, the things people need to do on computers are all able to be done on pretty well any computer made in the last 5 years equally.
I especially noticed this when Apple updated the Mac Mini and no longer offers quad-core, something that's been quite commonplace for around 6-8 years now. Buying a new computer without it in 2015 seems absurd to me, but the counter-argument is always that the majority don't need it for their web browsing, media management, office-suite work, and communications.
Well, I'm inclined to agree. But then why buy any new computer, for those people? Especially considering many people can do that stuff on phones or tablets.
I've been thinking also about the Surface Pro and how tablets are becoming more like actual computers. They can use peripherals and external monitors, even on some really inexpensive Windows tablets. But phones are pretty much just mini tablets with similar hardware.
And to the point...
What are your thoughts on a dockable phone? The phone would be the computer, and it gets docked to a station to be used as a full desktop with mouse, keyboard, and external monitor. You could also have ethernet and USB support.
It seems to make sense to me given that very powerful phones are commonplace and are entirely capable of performing most normal tasks, would a dockable phone be a logical next step?
Share your thoughts. I'm quite interested in this as I think it would be great for those people who don't want to keep spending money to upgrade their computer for little gain. By having a small docking station with everything you need, your phone becomes your computer. It also means all your stuff is with you at all times.
I think it would save money for a lot of people who don't care to keep their computers up to date as they use their phones/tablets for lots of things (and those devices tend to be upgraded more frequently as they are so often used).
