Old White Fogey - Hi there! Where are you from?
Me - Chicago
OWF - Oh... I've never heard of that... Is that in North or South Korea?
Me - It's in... Illinois.
OWF - Illinois? That sounds like a state! Wow I didn't know China had a place called Illinois.
Me - It's not in China...
OWF - Oh so... Japan then?
Me - [sigh] I was born in the US... Illinois is a 3 hour drive from here.
OWF - Why didn't you say so earlier! You look so... Asian though?
Me - That's because I am Asian.

Yea he was doing the thing where he exploits your need to passively seek his approval and he constantly shoots you down.
Basically tldr he was trying to pork you

I thought he was joking at first, but the conversation actually ran for much longer than the 10 second snippet I decided to transcribe. In my 5 minutes of talking to him I found out he was actually dead serious and was really just curious about where I came from and really had no idea where Chicago was.

Also, considering he was a server and his tip depended on me actually enjoying my dining experience, I doubt he would have been dumb enough to be openly and intentionally racist to a customer :confused:. I decided in the end to tip him normally because he was genuinely just trying to have a conversation and learn something about the outside world.

I also realized that the moment I set foot in that town, all eyes were on me (curious stares and hostile stares alike). I'm pretty sure I was the first Asian person to set foot in that town in the past 10 years. It always amazes me how insulated some towns can be in the US but sadly this kind of thing is far from uncommon in the Midwest. Not so much a problem on the East and West coasts though.

I get the same looks when i walk into the local truck stop here in my small town.
