Wireless Tenkeyless Keyboard?
« on: Wed, 15 December 2010, 14:13:20 »
Hey guys, I let my dad try my Filco tenkeyless and he loves the size and layout, but he remarked at the fact that it's wired.  His desk is a big U shape thing, where his computer is behind him, so he's typically had wireless keyboards otherwise he has to have a really long wire.

So, here's where I need some help.  I figured a good christmas gift would be a wireless tenkeyless keyboard (whether or not I can find a mechanical one is a stretch).  However, all I find are either minis (with no arrows or the insert/delete cluster), or full wireless, and a few with the main layout and a numpad, but no arrows or they're in the layout kind of funky.

Basically, what I want is a keyboard with exactly the same layout as the Filco tenkeyless...but in a wireless version.  Is there anything (rubber dome or mechanical) like that out there now?  Does it exist?

I only know of custom hack jobs as they've appeared in the mods section.

Right now, WIRED tenkeyless boards still are rare enough.
Hardware in signatures clutters Google search results. There should be a field in the profile for that (again).

This message was probably typed on a vintage G80-3000 with blues. Double-shots, baby. :D

Hmm, alright thanks.  I'll keep looking around, maybe I'll find something.  He used the Microsoft Arc for a while, but was bugged by the weird arrow key (it's one key that rocks in 4 directions) and missing home/end cluster, so maybe he'll like a mini if I can find one that doesn't have too crazy of a layout.

The Apple wireless keyboard is probably the best of its kind... if you own a Mac. Since it's just Bluetooth, I assume it'd work with Windows too, but the lack of home/end/pgup/pgdn would be annoying. At least you can do fn+arrow on a Mac to replicate the same functionality.

So, easy answer: buy a Mac mini and an Apple wireless keyboard. Problem solved.

Yeah, I looked at the Apple Bluetooth ones, but as you said, the lack of home/end cluster is a drawback.  Also, he builds his own computers, and we haven't bought a pre-made desktop in at least 10 or 15 years, so buying a pre-fab Apple (of all brands) is pretty much out of the question, also a little out of my price range this year for one gift :P.  Also he swears up and down that Apple keyboards either don't have a delete or a backspace, one of the two, but I'm pretty sure you can do some sort of meta-combination.  He wants the actual key though, so that idea is out.

Ripster: I'll take a look at that google keyboard, although at first glace it appears to be missing the home/end cluster so I don't know how well that would fare under my dad's scrutiny =\.

It's true---their smaller keyboards (wired and wireless) only have backspace, but you can get forward-delete by doing fn+backspace. AFAIK, that only works on Macs, though.
