What a terrible loss.  A fantastic and witty writer who wasn't afraid to lampoon and criticize the government, political figures, and world affairs with his works.  It's also good that he didn't have to suffer through Alzheimer's and make his family suffer with him.  I know he had been a proponent of assisted suicide so others who suffered like him wouldn't have to leave their families with the sad memories of his final years of Alzheimer's.

As a creator(wizard/builder) on the Discworld MUD this is pretty devastating.
Not sure how much longer it will run for, but earlier at least there was a wake of sorts in-game: http://discworld.starturtle.net/lpc/
His work was not only incisive and amusing, but also an escape and support for many people I know.
