Help! Will you fill in my survey?
« on: Thu, 26 March 2015, 11:14:52 »
Hi guys,

Sorry to be that guy, but I am needing some survey inputs for a project that I am currently doing.

If you have thirty seconds, it would be really good if you could quickly fill out the survey very quickly.

More information on the project is available if you would like some - thanks!

Question 4 (How best describes the makeup of your password(s)?) lacks an answer for those who use exactly 8 character passwords.

Yeah perhaps rephrasing to 8 or less characters would be better. 8 seems to be the maximum sadly for loads of stuff. Some of those 'biometric' systems are terribly easy to circumvent or fool as well, making them a poor choice. Like a lot of consumer grade fingerprint scanners... just the right amount of pressure is enough to get them to pass. Some facial recognition (such as some that make use of a webcam) can be fooled simply with a photo of the correct user. Voice recognition can be fooled with a recording. That kind of stuff is just crap really. Some are a lot of added cost for no real security benefit which is why I couldn't be bothered for personal systems or even in most office scenarios. A good password is safer if it is the only barrier, but obviously combinations of 2 or more effective methods could be really good in certain high security applications.

Thanks for the feedback from both of you, it's nice to have some insight too from you Ivan. Shout to pandanther too who pointed out the error on IRC.

The main method that is going to be discussed for this study is keystroke dynamics as I propose that if it is accurate enough will allow users to add security to their login sessions with no extra cost and little extra work. Any other input is appreciated!

Filled out now that there is an accurate answer for me. I find biometrics to be interesting but haven't kept up on it in quite a long time. I currently prefer two-factor authentication using a password and code sent via text/e-mail when available.

Do you mind sharing the results of the survey when you are finished so the people who participated can get a feel for how they fit in?

An important property of an access control mechanism is to be able to rescind the access if it has been broken. That is how using just biometrics for logging in is a fundamentally flawed idea.
It can really only be justified when used together with another type of access control such as a password or a physical key (pass card, etc.) in those cases when you need an extra layer of security.

Swill - of course, I will be making my program CC as well once it is completed. I have 100 results so far, still hoping for more to increase the accuracy of data. I hope to be making the finished report CC too but I am not too sure on how my university is on copyright - this will be looked into after graduation.

Appreciate those filling it out, will make for better results in the future.

NoblesseOblidge - I too think two-factor authentication is the best method of security when it is possible too but I am looking at a theory here, not practice.
Findecanor - It is true that there needs to be a continuous method when it is possible to introduce one. This is hard to do however with the majority of current implementations. I am looking into keystroke dynamics, and even though continuous authentication is a possibility it is easily prone to false-rejection with users having a drink of coffee, or typing whilst on the phone.

I have passwords of varying lengths and compositions, from as few as 4 letters or numbers to long ones of perhaps 15 characters with capitals, punctuation, etc.

My answer was a mostly random averaging of what my most common type might be.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

This is exactly fine as I expect averages that vary - the people that have been asked to fill in the survey also range in literacy with computers. Some will be IT professionals, some will use a word processor, some will use a web-browser. This should give good depth.

Thanks for the feedback however and filling it out, it is important that I note entries for that question could vary because of your comment. :)
