Keyboard dilemma
« on: Mon, 20 April 2015, 14:27:39 »
Greetings my fellow geekhackers,

I have been lurking over the forums for months since i got into the mechanical keyboard addiction and now it's my time to make my first post since I am in a dilemma between few choices I have. Therefore, I would like to hear your opinions. First of all, I am currently using a CM Storm Quickfire XT with blue switches, and I'm thinking of returning it back to the store claiming that it's defective ( yes I am a jerk ) so that I can give 90 euros more and get the Novatouch ( after been in the forums for so long my curiosity for Topre has been overwhelmingly increased) and I'm not sure if it's worth doing so because I am in love with the blue switches. Secondly, I was going to buy the new Pok3r from Massdrop but I cannot choose on whether to get green switches or clear switches. In the past I've used brown switches which I liked but the tactile response and the overall experience  wasn't satisfying enough for my taste, whereas I am very satisfied with the blue switches. Moreover, I am a college student doing an IT major and I am a gamer aswell;spending atleast 5-6 hours a day on my computer typing mostly, and therefore I don't want to get a switch that will cause fatigue to my fingers after an extended period of time.
To sum up quickly because I might have confused some of you ( English is not my native language ), I am using a CM Storm Quickfire XT with blue switches currently and I am not sure on whether returing it to the store and spending 90 euros more to get the Novatouch because I want to try Topre, and I WANT TO buy the new Pok3r because I want to have a compact keyboard that I can carry it around but I don't know what switch select.

Thanks in advance - overclocked157

The Novatouch was my first board, but I sorta disliked it, BUT some people swear by it. And you could sell your Quickfire and i would just try the pok3r with clears (high tactility but pretty heavy) or Browns which are like clears but lighter and less tactility. I just love 60% boards :D

First and foremost, welcome.

Secondly, based on the fact that you are already thinking of trading in the QF, for a Novatouch, know that at some point you are likely going to try every switch, even the same switch on multiple boards. It almost doesn't matter the order, there will always be a need to try something else. Get the Novatouch, and then you will be thinink...hmm, I wonder how much better the HHKB is, get the Pok3r with Greens, and you'll wish you got the Clears - it happens to nearly all of us. So basically, you can't go wrong with whatever you decide (or if you are feeling negative, no matter what you decide you'll always want something else).

The only piece of advice I could give, is that if you are planning on using the Pok3r in public, get the Clears, just to be polite to the people around you.

Yeah probably I am thinking to get the pok3r with clear switches since from what I've concluded, clears are an improved version of  brown switches and greens are just a stiffer version of blues.

Welcome to Geekhack!

MX greens are just like blues, but with stiffer springs.  If you like blues but find them too soft, by all means try greens.

Clears are like browns, but with a stiffer spring and better tactile feedback.  Some say that browns feel like gritty reds.  Clears seem to be very popular.

Topre is an entirely different feel.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I am not sure if we should be encouraging OP to be more of a jerk and keep returning keyboards claiming they are defective. I prefer to buy mine secondhand rather than make false claims.
Most of the modding can be done on your own once you break through the psychological barriers.

Well I haven't done it before and  my curiosity for Topre grows everyday, especially when I'm lurking in GH forums.....

Thank you guys for your time  and for your replies, I just wanted to hear a third person's opinion just to make things a bit more clear in my mind. I will order the Pok3r with clears, however I haven't decided  on whether to keep my keyboard with blues or to return it for the Novatouch.

I don't think clears will be a problem since I'm bottoming out the keys quite often.

I don't think you should get Topre if you like Blues. I would go with Clears because they have a more defined bump than Browns but are stiffer.
