[WTB] ABS M1 keyboard
« on: Mon, 06 April 2015, 10:03:06 »
I want to buy an ABS M1 keyboard.  Does anyone have one they would be interested in selling?

You want one for historical novelty, or what? A Filco Majestouch-1 is basically the same thing.

AFAIK, the ABS M1 is the only Filco-style keyboard that uses alps switches.  I want a Filco style body with matias tactile click switches (or maybe blue/white alps; I haven't decided yet), therefore the only keyboard that will work as a switch recipient is an ABS M1.

Filcos won't work as they only used cherry MX switches, unless I'm missing something.

Ah, yes, of course. I don't know if you'll have much luck finding one, though. I don't think I've seen any traded in about three years, and it's probably been about two years since I've even heard mention of one.

Maybe we can design a drop-in replacement PCB and plate, similar to the Phantom, which has support for Alps, and which would fit inside existing Filco and Rosewill cases. Something to think about.

Anyway, good luck finding an M1! :)

Could you elaborate on this a bit?  Who is designing these custom PCBs and plates?  Where would I go for more info?

Also is it possible to buy an empty keyboard case in the same style as the Filco/Rosewill/Costar/etc.?

Finally if I went the custom case/plate route, where would I get standard Filco-style keycaps that would fit alps switches?  That was the other reason I thought the ABS M1 was my only option.

Well, I already have a tested plate that will work with Filco and Rosewill full size boards, that would accept both MX and Alps switches. And I have been working with a brilliant PCB designer named Wilba for my JD45 and other upcoming projects. I bet we could collaborate on this project as well. We have lots of things in process, so I'm not sure what the timeline would be, as I haven't really discussed it with him beyond maybe a passing mention.

For keycaps, Matias has some exciting things coming soon. And SP can make any DCS or DSA family caps with Alps center stems.

Would we need to satisfy some MOQ?  I don't know if alps switches are popular enough around here to satisfy a large group buy.

Yes, I have read that Matias is planning to release a PBT set.  Heck, if Matias would make a keyboard using the standard layout and Costar case, I could just buy that one and not have to mess with this.  Barring that, I'll have to hack one together myself.

Getting SP to make keycaps for alps switches would require an MOQ, right?  Again, I'm not sure alps switches are popular enough around here to satisfy that requirement.  There was actually a recent thread about this:
