RGB TKL, RGB with standard keycaps?
« on: Tue, 17 March 2015, 15:15:48 »
Are there any RGB TKL keyboards besides the Corsair K65? Are there any RGB keyboards of any layout with standard size keycaps? Are there any decent keycap sets for the non-standard layout of these boards (with or without backlight compatibility)?

I know that most people here dislike backlit keyboards. I know about the 512 color limitation and bugs related to Steam compatibility and lock key freezing. I hate Best Buy. Despite all of this I keep coming back to the Corsair MX RGB boards as the best option for my current needs and ever-changing preferences. The one real sticking point though is the keycaps. Since they are non-standard I can't swap them out for something of better quality or variety. I also can't easily replace them when what I assume are cheap painted caps wear down and end up looking like crap. The only replacement set I'm aware of is the Max translucent black which doesn't appeal to me that much.

I don't like Razer. I wanted to like the Logitech G910 Orion Spark but it's bigger, uglier, more expensive, and at least at the store it felt slower and more clumsy to me. The Steelseries Apex M800 is nice and I like it but it's also bigger, more expensive, and has even worse keycap compatibility and replacement problems than the Corsair. Is that it? Is there anything else? Do I have any other options for either an RGB board or keycaps?

If you don't mind Kailh switches and don't need per-key colors, the Rosewill RGB80 might work.

If you're okay with the risk of buying from a lesser-known brand, Greetech switches and an ugly font (or have already decided to swap the keycaps), Royal Kludge's RG987 could work for you. They also have one with capacitive switches, the RC930-87, which is currently on Massdrop.

I think I do want the per-key RGB. I also saw the Massdrop stuff but I don't think I could go with the Kludge. I dunno maybe it's just the name but it doesn't look that good in comparison. I'm not finding any other options though, so I think I'll end up with one of the Corsair boards despite the problems. I can mostly accept the software as it is and the Max keycaps would technically work as a replacement when needed. Besides, it's not like this is the only keyboard I'll ever buy :)

The question now becomes which one to get. K65 is clearly the most suitable for gaming and mouse comfort. K95 provides everything but is big and I don't really know if I'd ever use the macro keys. K70, which I originally thought to be pointless, is now appealing because it's smaller than the K95 but still has the volume roller which is surprisingly useful when using headphones in a fullscreen game (as there is otherwise no way to change the volume without exiting back to Windows, UGH!).

FWIW: We're looking into the idea of aftermarket/custom keycaps for the QS1 switch (which is used by the M800).

How about Noppoo anything? I'm sure they're great products, and I realize it must be hard to name your company something that doesn't sound awkward or tacky in any language—but you'd think they'd at least consult native speakers of at least a few major languages to avoid choosing a name that, for example, makes you think of constipation.
