Custom Case Making Tools?
« on: Sun, 03 May 2015, 08:01:50 »
So I saw Swill's tool for making custom mounting plates... cool stuff! Is there a similar tool somewhere for making cases for custom designs? I have an idea for a project and this would definitely make it easier.

Well, as far as case making goes, you could use swill's builder and use the skeleton case, other than that you would have to use a CAD software

If you don't mind the plate overhanging the sides Swill could add sides with notches to clip into the top and bottom plates quite easily, I wonder if he's thought about it.

If you can show me what you mean I can probably add it.

I have not seen other tools for case making. NudeCNC is doing some pretty cool stuff, but nothing diy. If my tool is not a fit for your needs, contact jdcarpe or MOZ with your ideas and they will likely help you out (maybe for a nominal fee).

If you have questions about my tool I am will to help and maybe we can think outside the box.

Thanks for the tip! Your tool is fantastic for creating the mounting plate... I guess I was just wondering if there was a tool out there that created the housing or case for the plate and PCB to go into. Does your tool do that too and I just missed it? I could probably put together something out of wood or by welding metal pieces together... but I'm not very good at that kind of thing as it currently stands... I guess I could always learn! :)

Yes it does that. Just pick the sandwich case and it will generate all the files needed for the plate and case.

It's really easy in my head but how to explain...

You'd need to add a "plate thickness" option then make two of each of these shapes for the ends and sides, where the steps/slots are [thickness] so it fits flush.

I put the slots on the front/back so it makes a nice flat face, but I'm not sure if slotting the sides together is needed as it's not very tall.

The downside is that the top and bottom plate will have to have an overhang to clip into but as it's unlikely there will be any outward force and you can't bend it inwards while in use as there would be a notch in the slot maybe 1mm would be enough?  Depends how much you trust your postman!
