Question - Dylon dye keycaps
« on: Sat, 04 April 2015, 09:35:39 »
Greetings all

I´ve just recently purchased some white PBT keycaps with transparent POM legends.
I want to dye these keycaps, and I´ve read positive stuff about the brand Dylon and their Multi-purpose dyes.
Sadly I can´t seem to get the multi-purpose type where I live.
This is why I would like to know if the type called fabric dye for hand use, will be of any use to dye my keycaps?
If it can´t be used I´ll purchase the MPD from Germany.

I'd see if you can find any iDye Poly first.  It works quicker than Dylon and looks great.

Sadly I can´t seem to find that either. and dylon is about 5 euro cheaper for each color, so ill start with dylon first.

The thing with the multi-purpose dye is that it can dye synthetics like polyester (and therefore also PBT). The ordinary fabric dye won't do.

I ordered Dylon multi-purpose dye from http://thedyeshop.eu/. They also sell iDye Poly if you want to try that.

I purchased the dylon ones from a german seller.
I just tried dyeing some excess keys with the "coffee" and the water did indeed turn into a really nice brown color, but even after having the key in the water for 2h at 70c, all I noticed was that the caps turned grey :S I have no idea why that is. (I did it with toubleshot white keycaps) These are the keycaps im trying to dye http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vortex-106-White-PBT-Backlight-Doubleshot-Cherry-MX-Keyset-Keycaps-/281679977434?nma=true&si=OdwHlfKRmqXtP7Pq1b2%252BqBg9E84%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

So I´ve ordered some of the Idye poly, hopefully I can work out a nice color to go with brown.
