Ugh, this dredged up horrible memories of my very first job, that used one of these... and no, the fact that everyone had to punch in had surprisingly little to do (directly) with why said job was horrible. Just a side 'benefit'.

LOL. No, actually it punches a whole through your hand, like a leather punch.

Obviously someone at Schlage thought it'd be a cute name ("punch, get it?")—but it doesn't exactly make you want to stick your hand into the thing, does it?

We have a similar device at work for clocking in and out.

Because theft is a problem in the workplace. This would prevent your buddy from punching your time card for you when you aren't actually present at work. It probably costs employers quite a bit on average, to pay people for time they weren't actually working,

But couldn't someone abduct you, chop off your hand, use it to clock in as you, then steal a bunch of stuff you'd be blamed for? It's obviously not a perfect system.

Well when there are 400+ employees who all average 5-10+ hours a week of overtime and daily/monthly/yearly attendance based bonuses it is important to keep everyone's hours/attendance in check.

And it's all fairly automated which the bean counters like.

Very interesting. I wouldn't have thought to use them as a time-card. The only time I've dealt with them is at various colos that I visit from time to time for work. They're used for access control at various mantraps in the facility, and to access the cage we rent.

They're designed for use with the right hand, but I've seen a few people use their left hand, palm up.
