Change an apple keybaord to a windows one!?
« on: Sun, 31 May 2015, 06:09:06 »
Hey so I want to buy a new keyboard and I like the apple wireless keyboard but I want to use it on windows 8. My problem is, that apple has other keys like command etc. and my question is:

Can I change the keys to work like a windows keyboard?: http://www.bilder-upload.eu/show.php?file=eb32d0-1433070880.png
(I would take an eu keyboard) with a tool like Microsoft Keyboard layout creator (please tell me if there is a better tool)?

If so, I would buy some stickers and change the layout to a normal windows layout. :thumb:

I'm not even sure that this forum is about membrane keyboards. Anyway you need a keyboard remap software http://lifehacker.com/5883003/the-best-key-remapper-for-windows

Any stickers you put on are just going to wear out almost immediately. Just find a comparable chiclet-style keyboard for a "normal" Windows layout and I'm sure it'll run you like $50 max.

Command and option should work like Win and Alt without doing anything; the keyboard isn't some bizzare thing that sends incomprehensible codes to the OS. It's just a keyboard. A keyboard that wouldn't work with Windows would be awkward with the ability to use Boot Camp to dualboot Windows on a Mac, heh.

If it's a wireless keyboard your computer needs to have bluetooth support and you'd just pair it like anything else; if it's a wired one just plug the thing in.

That said, dear gods why would you use one of those things? I used to have to use the full-sized wired one at work when I worked at a call center doing tech support for macs. They're awful. :P

Eh, I don't think they're so bad. I mean, they're nothing special, but I've used *much* worse OEM keyboards.

This! There are lots of clones out there that look practically the same. How they feel however is another matter.

If you do get the Apple keyboard, Apple does have a Windows driver for it ... but it is part of their "Boot camp" and could be difficult to get hold of if you don't have a Mac.
That driver would enable you to configure the keyboard to work the same way as under Mac: with the Fn key and function keys.

I don't see any reason not to use it with Windows. You can find the Bootcamp support software online and that includes the driver. You can then remap whatever you want with MKLC or AutoHotKey.

I think it's one of the best chiclet boards out there and most of the clones don't feel nearly as nice.

Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.
