What is this 60%+ 5-row keyboard?
« on: Thu, 04 June 2015, 02:09:32 »
http://blog.ctrlalt.io/articles/ahhh-sh1t (replace 1 with i)

I'm in love with that keyboard, the case, the plate, I would change the layout to have 3 leftmost bottom modifiers tho

I'm thinking of going for an extended 60% keyboard that has standard dedicated arrows, but the case is always the challenge, thanks to poker's, consumer 60% cases are a thing, however anything beyond the standard 60% sizing, the case is a real challenge

Would appreciate any advice / pointers

That's a 65% layout, I do believe. I don't know that one has ever been done as a buy, just as people making them as one-offs.

You might have luck asking in the simple questions thread if a 65% group buy or such has ever been done.

For what it's worth, the Atomic keyboard has a similar layout, despite being ortholinear, and is due to have milled aluminium cases and PCBs later on this year.

Ironically, I plan to buy a kit myself when they're available, and am awaiting my Granite order especially for it  :))

I'm also hoping they end up doing the same for their Neutrino plate design, I pm'ed the creator/initiator of the design an hour ago to ask about whether such plans exist

Atomic would never work for me unfortunately, there are too many challenges involved

Also, Although I really admire/appreciate the work/business of ortholinear keyboards, I find the keyboards to be a bit crude, again the cases are to blame here, as mostly they determine how a keyboard is perceived aesthetically

That would be my board.  It's a 22Mini-EX Dark Gray built by Apollos.  He does amazing work and I have had/still have several of his boards.  If you are interested in getting one yourself, check out his site here: http://22kbd.com/  His e-mail address is on that page and he's usually very quick to respond unless he's out of the country doing mission work.  Awesome guy.  I've had nothing but positive experiences with him.

Appreciate that.  I've been MIA for a bit but hopefully I get back into the swing of things and start throwing up some more posts again.  Good luck finding your 65% board. :thumb:

Is there any typing-wise downside of having those extra 1u keys near the rightmost keys?

My current 60% setup with dedicated arrows is working out well for me (as I only use the right shift with Vim), but a ~65% with dedicated arrows would make things theoretically perfect, the only possible downside is those extra 1u keys messing with general typing reflexes - like finding the backspace by the top-right edge of the keyboard etc.

Nope.  I haven't had any issues at all.  It's just typing on a 60% with that one extra row on the side.  The distance my fingers move is the same regardless of whether it's a 60, 65, 75, etc.  The only time I have trouble finding the backspace is when I switch from my HHKB back to the 22Mini-EX.
