I seem to remember it being some sort of MX compatible inductive switch.  The post at the bottom of the switch goes through the hole in the PCB and triggers a key press.

From looking at the small part of PCB that we can see, what you say makes total sense.
If I was at my father's place in the US I would pick it up just to play around with
