DSA Eve key caps
« on: Thu, 09 July 2015, 21:46:56 »
I have been looking at getting a set of these, and I wondered what those of you who have them thought about the keys? I guess it wouldn't really matter so much about being the Eve set, but the DSA profile in general. I kind of want an SA set as well, but while I wait for them to come available again (Why aren't you open again yet, ctrlalt store???) I have found myself returning to the pmk site frequently to look at them again and again.

It's not really as obsessive as it sounds, but still, often enough that I probably should buy a set.  :-\

Anyway, thoughts?

Both DSA and SA have a bit of a "retro" look. Most SA sets are full-profile (curved from top row to bottom row), whereas DSA are all flat across every row. Flat profile has the benefit of swapping out keys for different layouts (Dvorak, Colemak, etc.), but a lot of people dislike the feel of a flat profile as it can make it harder to find where you are while touch typing.

Personally, I like SA but I'm not really a fan of DSA. That said, as with anything else keyboard-related, it all comes down to preference and if you feel strongly about a certain colorway which is only available in a certain profile, you can probably pretty quickly get used to the feel if you set your mind to it.

Hope this helps.

I know DSA is a love/hate profile amongst many.  I always have to stick up for DSA whenever this question arises.  It's personally my favourite profile, especially for any gaming usage, though I feel my typing is about equal on it vs. standard/Cherry as well.  Retro DSA is my daily driver and I'm not willing to switch away from DSA for this board at this point.

But, as njbair said: personal preference.  Worth trying and finding out for sure where your own preferences lie!

Yeah, I know how it goes. There's no universally correct answer. For example, I thought I would find and fall in love with some form of Mx board, and yet the one I'm using now and love is the Royal Kludge RC930-87. I even enjoy the caps on it, or at least I think I do. I'm not sure how much of the enjoyment is the switches and how much is the keys. But, if I understand right, they're pom.

Anyway, maybe I'll just give it a go and see what I think. I do game a fair amount, so perhaps these flat tops will work just fine.

i'm more or less in the same situation. i was going to grab a gmk set but then i saw eve and dolch from pmk which i really like. i definitely want to try dcs when they do come up. i haven't tried any other profiles besides oem and the profile on the realforce 87u but after reading this, why not.

I've been using DSA keycaps for months, I think I enjoy regular profiles more

The only thing good about DSA is the spacebar and the thumb relaxation, some people flip their spacebars and some bottom row keys, with DSA you get that relaxation on default

Other than that, for typing, I don't think DSA is optimal - at least not as it is (designing a keyboard with a tilted/curved plate could make DSA the optimal keycap for that keyboard)

On the other hand, D/SA's have the best looks, as they have a larger press/print area, it's these looks that make these keycap sets tempting

If you enjoy your current keycap set, I say keep on enjoying it, don't complicate your life :)

(I have 2 Eve sets, one unused, I'm probably going to sell all my DSA/SA sets at one point)

Well if that's the case, let me know if you are looking to sell that unused Eve set   ;)

DCS is basically the same as Cherry/OEM. They are all slightly different, but not enough that anyone could really tell the difference by feel. It's just sort of the "normal" curved profile, with cylindrical keycap tops as opposed to the spherical tops on DSA/SA caps.

Come to think of it, Cylindrical vs. Spherical is a good way to remember DCS vs DSA/SA.

I am in the camp of loving DSA, I use a laptop most of the time so the flat profile feels at home to me, and it makes it so I can do whatever layout I want on my LS

After testing GMK's, I started appreciating DSA's a bit more, I'm not saying they are good, but compared to the alternatives they are not bad

I also enjoyed the flat F/J's with DSA's which I can't match with GMK's (though the Eve set has the non-flat ones)

Edit: The Eve is available again, I just noticed it, should have sold one of mine fast - the worst part is the sets I bought has shape imperfections, probably from insufficient cooling, I wonder how these new ones are, but since I moved onto other profiles, I guess it doesn't really matter too much
